Started - January 1, 2021. The King of Staten Island: Watched - January 31, 2021 Synopsis: Scott has been a case of arrested development since his firefighter dad died. He spends his days smoking weed and dreaming of being a tattoo artist until events force him to grapple with his grief and take his first steps forward in life. Review: This has been on my to-watch list for a long time. I was tempted to actually order it on demand when it was released back when everything shut down. Finally ended up catching it on HBO while getting ready to head out and get supplies before the big snowstorm. I have been a fan of Judd Apatow for a really long time and still enjoyed some of his "duds". One thing that I really like about Apatow's writing is how grounded and relatable he makes his characters. He also has a knack for choosing the right people to be cast in the film. Granted, Pete Davidson had co-written the script but I really dug his acting. The supporting cast around him was excellent as well. I was exposed to Bill Burr's dramatic acting chops by seeing him reprise his role in The Mandalorian and was impressed at how well he did. Seeing him in this really cemented his ability to channel some dramatic acting when he needs to. Definitely did not regret having this film on while getting ready. Rating: 8/10 The Little Things: Watched - January 31, 2021 Synopsis: Two cops track down a serial killer. Review: Man I really had high expectations for this film given the three big leads in the film. I will say that the movie had me really invested in the first two acts alone where it did act like your typical whodunit film. Not to mention seeing Denzel and Rami play off one another in their scenes, it was really cool seeing their dynamic. The cast was great for the material they were given. When it comes to Jared Leto, I have to admit that I am a little apprehensive when he is in a film. It's not to say that he's not a good actor, instead, I sometimes question his approaches to some of his roles that can be a hit or miss with me (Joker being a common example.) However, Jared Leto is damn good in this film as well. Once it passes the 1 hour or so mark, things really drag on. As soon as Jared Leto is introduced, I expected things to really pick up, and it just kind of walks itself toward the finish line. My girlfriend gave up on the movie at this point and I still stuck on it. You go through the 2 hours run time to be deflated by the ending of this film. SPOILER: Despite what the synopsis says, you don't ever find the serial killer. I read up a little on this film and apparently, the screenplay for this film was written 30 years ago. Frankly, it shows. TL, DR: "The script should have stayed on his desk 30 years ago" - My girlfriend. Rating: 5/10

4/4/20-12/26/20 IMDB synopsis: "After a confrontation with an unstable man at an intersection, a woman becomes the target of his rage." I really liked this film! Why? Because it went "balls out." They didn't hold anything back. They embraced the concept - unstable man harasses and terrifies a stranger - and executed it wonderfully. This is a true R-rated movie, and I mean that as a compliment. Give Russell Crowe a ton of credit for owning the role (he was very believable - maybe not terrifying - but believable as a man who "snaps" and wants to exact his revenge). The pacing is solid. The supporting cast is pretty good too - I felt like Caren Pistorius (who played the woman) was a good foil for Crowe (she struck the right balance of being "normal" but then being able to rise to the occasion). Like any movie in this genre, there's some scenes/choices that weren't very believable, if you examine the script too closely (there's definitely a shortage of cops, for example; I guess "Defund the Police" became a reality in this film - sorry, I'm getting political). The ending could have been a little more intense too; it wasn't as crazy as some of the previous scenes, so that was a tiny bit disappointing. But overall, this was a really fun ride that lives up to its title. Think of it as maybe a homeless man's version of "Joker" - like "Joker" it's about a normal guy who goes bonkers...and like "Joker," it seems strangely relevant for our times - people over-stressed, on the edge, too quick to resort to violence, in a world that feels both too crowded and too lonely. TMS[3] #25: Freaks [2019] (And My List of the 100 Greatest Movies Ever)
4/4/20-5/29/20 IMDB synopsis: “A bold girl discovers a bizarre, threatening, and mysterious new world beyond her front door after she escapes her father's protective and paranoid control.” Another recommendation from u/thaworldhaswarpedme – this one turned out pretty decent. Without spoiling anything, the plot was a little cliched, but I give it points for strong execution, starting with the acting. Like u/thaworldhaswarpedme said, Bruce Dern is a “national f****** treasure,” so he adds instant value. But equally impressive are Emile Hirsch (who plays the dad) and Lexy Kolker (who plays the girl). Together, they’re a fearsome threesome, acting-wise. While I can’t say it’s a great film – because the plot felt a little stale and predictable – it was watchable. Not bad if you’re in the mood for sci-fi and don’t want to spend any cash (it’s free on Netflix). Rating: 6.3 / 10 Oh, and I know it’s a little off-topic (sorry mods), but a few days ago, I did something I’ve never done before – I made a list of what I consider to be the 100 greatest films of all-time (or at least the 100 greatest films that I’ve seen). I should mention I’m ranking them in terms of “greatness,” not my own personal feelings. So, for example, “Terminator 2” is my favorite movie of all-time, but I feel like “Titanic” and a few other films check more boxes when it comes to overall “greatness.” I realize “Titanic” is a bold choice for #1 but I’m willing to defend it. In any case, check it out and tell me what I got right and what I got wrong.
2/29/2020 Imdb Synopsis: An aspiring comedian and lifelong loser, Arthur Fleck, finds himself in a downward spiral that eventually leads to the genesis of Gotham city's greatest criminal provocateur. This was a fantastic movie but, for me, not a fantastic Joker movie. In fact, had i not known it to be a Joker movie at all, I believe I'd have enjoyed it even more. As a fan of the comics, I will freely admit that my reaction is, no doubt, tainted by past experience developing familiar expectations. But this Joker Genesis just didn't sit right with me. Joker is confident. Fleck is uncertain. The Clown Prince is unflinching where Arthur is cowardly. Mr J. is aggressive and unyielding, this hapless comedian is meek and pliable. My biggest issue is not that such a transformation could take place but that a man who has allowed life to beat him for so long unchallenged would change so drastically in a week. While the concept of a lifelong loser who snaps over the course of some final and continued injustice is neither original nor unbelievable, I just had a difficult time reconciling Arthur as he was with the Joker I have in head. This, to me, played better as a tale of a man in the time of Joker. A would-be minion, that inspires a movement. That, perhaps in turn, inspires our true Clown of the Hour to come out of the shadows. I want a Joker with the wackiness of Caesar Romero, the subtle class of Nicholson's interpretation, the dark edge that Ledger brought to the role and the absolute absence of Leto's iteration. My mind could be changed with a sequel involving, say, a development into this type of Joker after the experiences of the first film, but I wont hold my breath. As a One-Out though, I need a little more. It's tenuous connection to the comic book world was presented in scenes that added little to the overall narrative and served mostly as a vehicle to arrive at the inevitable murder of Thomas and Martha Wayne at the film's conclusion. However, as a movie about a man's descent into the dark resolution of his own capabilities, it is truly magnificent. Phoenix' Oscar win is well-deserved but its no surprise that he nails the role. He develops the character of Arthur throughout the film with terrifying allure and his evolution from a hopeless washout to the dark icon of a city on edge is truly captivating. The dude is an acting powerhouse with few roles that don't stir the appreciation of most audiences, from the most casual movie goer to seasoned critics alike. De Niro was great as the arrogant talk show host, Murray Franklin. Deet's Sophie was no standard fare with what little time she was given. A dark, brooding atmosphere coupled with exemplary sets and a fitting score make for a very intriguing film about a man whose life has been one dark travesty after another and how it leads him to the (possibly?) inevitable conclusion of concentrated chaos that we bare witness to in the finale. Great acting all-around. Some complained of pacing issues or the movie itself excusing violent behavior in the wake of traumatic experience, but i find these to be unfounded. I was never bored and as with any art that touches on the subject of abuse, I don't see it as an excuse so much as an invitation to look deeper into the problem then it's superficial surface. A fantastic film. I'm just biased as a fan of the source material and my own preconceptions. Obviously go watch this if you haven't yet given it your time. 7.25/10

3/31/19-12/17/19 IMDB synopsis: “Fueled by cheap whiskey, greed and hatred, Willie teams up once again with his angry little sidekick, Marcus, to knock off a Chicago charity on Christmas Eve.” I couldn’t help but like the original “Bad Santa,” so when I found out there was a sequel, I almost certainly had to give it a try. Yes, it felt like a cash grab (a sequel 13 years after the original), but with most of the original gang returning (Billy Bob Thornton, Tony Cox, and Brett Kelly [who plays the kid]), I was intrigued. Overall, I think it almost perfectly matches the original in terms of quality (whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing depends on how you feel about R-rated comedies). This is definitely a raunchy film (who would have thought an old, drunk Santa Claus could get so much tail?), but I’m OK with that (assuming it doesn’t become too tasteless). Kathy Bates, who plays Billy Bob’s mom, was a great addition to the cast. And Christina Hendricks, who plays one of Billy Bob’s love interests, was also fun. Like the original, the plot is on the thin side, but it makes up for it with laugh-out-loud humor. Some of the jokes fall flat, but most of them work. This is one of those films where you know what you’re getting: If the premise of Bad Santa 2 sounds fun to you, you’ll probably like it. And if it doesn’t, then you won’t. Simple. But for the record, I did like it. Rating: 6.2 / 10 Oh, hey, guess what? I’ve made my list of the 25 best movies of the decade. The best, IMO, is “Nebraska.” I love that film. The first day I watched it, I watched it the very next day and then again two days after that. A brilliant drama that’s also one of the funniest films of all time. Now, having said all that, I don’t think it’s unfair to say “Nebraska” shouldn’t be “film of the decade” because it doesn’t really tell us anything meaningful about our current decade; it doesn’t reflect or analyze the zeitgeist – it’s just an old man and his family going on a road trip. With that in mind, I would like to nominate “Joker” as the “film of the decade” (even though it’s #3 on my list). “Joker” really does define the 2010’s – the clash between the elites and the rest of us throughout the Western world. “Is it just me, or is it getting crazier out there?” is such a wonderful line to describe the whole decade, especially for where we are now in 2019. So, just like in baseball, where you have an “MVP” and an “Offensive Player of the Year,” I think there’s a subtle difference between what I consider to be “Best Film of the Decade” (“Nebraska”) and the “Film of the Decade” (“Joker”). I wasn’t expecting much out of it but the first time I saw it I really loved it. The second time I still liked it, just not as much as I initially did the first time. It was still good enough for me to rank it my #10 film of the year. This was my third time watching it, and I still really like it. I think it was unfairly criticized by some media outlets. Phoenix absolutely kills it as Joker, and I think he cemented himself as THE joker (hard to believe but I really do like this performance more than Ledger). I think the homages to Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy are somewhat forced and some of the movie is predictable. Rewatching it, I think it’s out of my top 10, but still in the top 15. Rating: 89/100

IMDb rating: 8.3/10 I have finally gotten around to a modern classic. I originally planned to watch American Graffiti, but I couldn’t find it on any of my streaming platforms. Even the ones of the Ahoy! nature. What is not to say about Taxi Driver? I went into this movie with a light knowledge of it. I had of course seen the famous finger gun scene that takes place at the end of the movie, but had just been urged to see it myself. This movie blew me away in many ways. I thought that I had an understanding of Scoresesee’ and his films but this one was very different. I have seen many of his films like The Departed and The Irishman, which I both loved, but seeing such a single character driven movie was refreshing. He takes a first person story and crafts and interesting tale of a troubled and problem ridden man who wants retribution. That man being of course, Travis Bickle. A Vietnam Vet who struggles with PTSD while working nights as a taxi driver. You get to see the dirt, the grime, the sleeze of New York City on display, all of it. Travis sees this first hand as he drives around prostitutes and men, and problem ridden people who spill it all to him. In many ways he reads this almost like Rorschach, that these people are inherently bad and something has to be done. While Watchmen came much later, this idea of black and white justice is very clear in Taxi Driver. He has a relationship with a young girl named Iris (Jodie Foster) which shows to him that the world is a rotten apple. That this youthful young girl has been tainted by the dirty world he lives in. This drives him to eventually take action in the climax of the movie. Overall, his relationship with women is emblematic of a loner. One that has trouble communicating because how messed up he is inside his head. He takes the other female lead Betsy (Cybil Shepherd) on a date to a porno movie theatre and doesn’t even grasp the problem with it. Never mind that the girl only went on the date with him because kept calling her and urging her. The music in this movie is so great and telling about the time period. It really sets the stage for the 1970s and the state that the American public was in. The country had been raped in a sense of its psyche, Vietnam, Watergate, Pentagon Papers, and a general mistrust and lost vision in society had set in. A lot of movies of the time show this. As far as the Joker (2019) comparisons and inspirations, it is has become very clear to me. I was a big fan of Joker and after seeing Taxi Driver I can see how much inspiration is taken from this film. The character of Travis is a little more complex and open to interpretation than Joker. While both think that what they were doing was justified, Travis’ arc is a little less defined as far as events, most of the change is mental. Until he shaves the Mohawk, buys a .44 magnum, and tries to kill a presidential candidate. The green lens and filmmaking style used in both are very similar. I do however appreciate both and think they are both great films. As far as DeNiro is concerned, I think he is at his best here. I loved his work in The Deer Hunter, but he feels in a different element in this film. Now the ending. In my opinion, the last few scenes had to be a dream. The letter he got from Iris’ parents and the heroism angle was too good to be real. Especially how refined he carries himself after snapping in such a manner. He readjusts himself back into life like this persona he has created has no effect on him. The best way to sum this movie would be to use a quote from the movie: “You get a job. You become the job.” Some other performances of note include: Jodie Foster as Iris Cybil Shepherd as Betsy And Harvey Keitel as Sport Overall, This movie is a classic that still holds water

Review: DC is taking a chance with this one, who knows if it’ll pay off. I for one enjoyed this movie despite some of its glaring flaws, namely it’s incoherent structure during the first act. I thought all the fight scenes were shot excellently, and Harley, Huntress, and Black Mask were awesome. Score: 67/100
TMS[2] #90: Basic Instinct [1992] (and my Top 10 Movies of 2019)
3/31/19-12/26/19 IMDB synopsis: "A violent police detective investigates a brutal murder that might involve a manipulative and seductive novelist." This movie was a huge deal when it came out in 1992. And I mean a huge, huge deal. I was a little too young to see it at the time. And over the years, I never really felt inspired to watch it. I guess the main reason is that I kind of got the impression it was a "chick flick." And its IMBD score (7.0) isn't too impressive. Still, this is the one of the most famous movies of the 90's. And since it's free on Amazon Prime, I decided to give it a try. So what did I think? Let me start off by saying "I get it." I get why this movie is so iconic. Sharon Stone was fantastic. She owned the role of "femme fatale" in a way that I don't think any actress can ever equal. She was drop-dead gorgeous, bold, and tantalizing. She took a risky, tough role and owned it. And I want to give Michael Douglas some credit too: He was a great foil for Stone. And they had very real, believable chemistry. The sex scenes are...vivid...which adds to the power of the film. Now, as for the plot, well...I'm OK with it. Is it a little ridiculous? Absolutely. But, if you glance over some of the more obvious plotholes (why was there no DNA testing, for example?), there's actually kind of a smart unfolding of the plot that I found myself embracing. And I actually really liked the ending; it's actually perfect considering everything that happened (but I won't spoil it). Overall, I think this is a unique and compelling movie, and maybe in a strange way underrated in terms of its overall quality. If I was in a good mood, I would even say this was "almost a great film" (in terms of pure entertainment). But the plot wasn't good enough to reach that mark. Also, I thought the score was annoying. How the heck was it nominated for Best Score at the Oscars? Craziness. Meanwhile, Stone wasn't nominated for Best Actress. Even more craziness. Bottom line: A worthwhile flick to watch and debate; recommended. Rating: 6.7 / 10 Oh, hey, guess what? I made a list of my Top 10 Movies of 2019. Inevitably, this list will change as I watch more films. But this is a good start, I think. Also, I should I mention that I didn't put documentaries on this list. 3/31/19-2/9/20 IMDB synopsis: “After splitting with the Joker, Harley Quinn joins superheroes Black Canary, Huntress and Renee Montoya to save a young girl from an evil crime lord.” I’m going to get straight to the point: This was a fun movie. Imagine if “John Wick” and “Deadpool” had a baby. That would be “Birds of Prey.” In other words, there’s a lot of action. There’s a lot of fun energy. Very compelling characters. And a plot that’s good enough to keep you engaged through the whole film. With the conventional superhero/comic book genre dead, IMO, with “The Avengers” coming to a close (and with “Joker” raking in a $1 billion worldwide) this is precisely the kind of R-rated, off-beat comic-book movie we should be embracing. Let’s start off with Margot Robbie, as Harley Quinn. She really owns the role; I mean this is not Joaquin Phoenix in “Joker” or anything. But I love how she dived into this ridiculous, sexy character and made it her own. Kudos also to Ewan McGregor, who also really went “all in” as Quinn’s antagonist, creating a stylish, fun-loving ” baddie” that I’ve never seen in the Marvel/DC universe before. I enjoyed it, and it definitely made the movie better. Lots of great supporting characters too. The pacing was a little uneven, but it hit the right marks – especially a climactic battle at an amusement park (seriously, what a great idea; how come nobody’s ever thought of doing that before?) In terms of downsides: I mean, the humor could have used some work. I lightly chuckled a few times, but I’m not sure I ever had a proper laugh. Harley also brought up Joker too much, and how much she missed him. After the fourth or fifth time, my reaction was basically, “Alright, enough already; I get the point.” But I’m being nitpicky. Overall, I really enjoyed it. Not amazing or anything, but it exceeded my expectations and I think more people should see it. Rating: 6.8 / 10
3/31/19-1/25/20 IMDB synopsis: "Three 6th grade boys ditch school and embark on an epic journey while carrying accidentally stolen drugs, being hunted by teenage girls, and trying to make their way home in time for a long-awaited party." "Good Boys" is...good enough, IMO. With a movie like this, you know what you're getting: A lot of f-bombs. A lot of sexual innuendo. But you know it won't go TOO far because the protagonists, after all, are 11-year old boys. In other words, this wasn't going to be (and couldn't be) "American Pie." But it's...good enough. I found myself chuckling a fair amount, with even a few big laughs. The movie moves at a great pace and the sets are constantly changing (one minute they're at a neighbor's house, a few minutes later they're at the park, then they're at the mall; I like movies that keep moving). In terms of downsides, I mean, it's never really hysterical or original (most of the jokes revolve around the boys discovering sex toys and misusing them), the boys aren't particularly likeable, and the film wasn't quite sure how to end. But it's cute and watchable. So if you like R-rated comedies, you might want to give it a try. Rating: 6.2 / 10 Oh, and guess what?! It looks like I've completed the challenge - 100 movies in 9 months and 25 days. Not as good a pace as last year, but good enough.
