Jeopardy! recap for Mon., Nov. 30

Here are today's contestants:
Ryan gradually edged away from his opponents and finished the game emphatically on DD3, leading into FJ with $25,800 vs. $6,600 for Ben! and $4,100 for Tracy.
DD1 - $400 - THE BIRDS & THE BEES - Mason & carpenter bees are classified as this type that practices social distancing full time (Tracy lost $500 from her score of $200.)
DD2 - $800 - GEOGRAPHY - One of the 2 landlocked South American nations; both have Spanish & Guarani as official languages (Tracy won $1,000 from her third-place score of $1,500 vs. $6,600 for Ryan.)
DD3 - $800 - HAVING AN ARGUMENT - Senator, 2 minutes for this segment of a debate, to attack elements of the prior argument such as its assumptions or its relevance (With one other top-row clue remaining, Ryan won $6,000 from his score of $19,800 vs. $6,200 for Ben.)
FJ - COMEDY MOVIES - In the original script for this 1975 film, the title object was finally found in London's Harrods department store
Only Ryan was correct on FJ, adding $523 (his father's birthday) to win with $26,323 for a four-day total of $104,526.
Triple Stumper of the day: The players missed on the first three selected clues in AUTHORS' MIDDLE NAMES, including that of Western scribe Pearl Grey (Zane).
Daily Double deviations: Curiously, all three of the Daily Doubles were located in the second row from the top, and twice, a player (Tracy) with a score of less than the top clue value of the round wagered exactly half of the maximum bet allowed.
Pedantry corner: I guess "a black fly in your Chardonnay" is ironic because the fly is black and the wine is white? Seems like a bit of a stretch, but I've never won a Grammy, so what do I know?
Correct Qs: DD1 - What is solitary? DD2 - What is Paraguay (or Bolivia)? DD3 - What is rebuttal? FJ - What is "Monty Python and the Holy Grail"?

Here's a small commentary on the case of Sushant Singh Rajput. It struck a chord with a lot of people and so I am encouraged to post it in a separate thread.

Here are some things I would like to put some light on — woke intellectuals, drugs and mass-media manipulation. Just some random ramblings in my leisure time. I hope people find intriguing.
a) Woke intellectuals — These are people who are simply contrarians. Going against the grain makes them feel important. It's a natural reaction, people want to be unique. These people are nowhere intellectually or emotional invested in this case like you and I have been. They just see tens of thousands of tweets trending everyday on Twitter with their broken English and embarrassing punctuations, and belittle the people behind them. That's one way to make you feel better about yourself. I am willing to wager that 100% of these people have a deep-rooted belief that they're smarter than the average person. Not coincidentally, they're also quite miserable mentally. Let's look at the state of India, a subreddit that gets ten posts a week about someone wanting to kill themselves, fifteen about how frustrated they are with the country, twenty about seeking employment or academia advice. These people aren't smart, every one of these are miserable and they rely on bullying and belittling to feel better about themselves.
Anywho, these people are not going to acknowledge any sort of concrete proof. Like the arrest of two key people today. They'll simply ignore it, or move on. They'll totally detach themselves with the case and pretend they never looked into it in any respectable detail. A lot of them will privately back paddle and delete their posts and comments. Don't waste your time in debating them. They're all frustrated underachievers in need of validation.
b) Drugs — Many people would point out that cannabis is nothing serious. And to some extent, even pardon charges of consumption. To some degree, I agree. But the question isn't about consumption, it's about possession with intent to sell. Also, people like to bring up the legalization of cannabis in the US. Well, you can't just walk into a marijuana store and buy a bag of cannabis. It's a controlled substance that requires prescription. The key is in the intent & degree of use. In other news, heroin and anesthesia are the same thing.
Also, like it or not, the law of the land is the law of the land. You can't pardon having a bunch of amphetamine pills here and then get to say "2.5 million Americans legally use Adderall." Same with the cannabis. The most of the internet, especially Reddit is pro-cannabis. Nobody likes to talk about things like marijuana-induced psychosis which is an umbrella term for grave mental illnesses like the Schizophrenia, Bipolar disorder, Depersonalisation disorder etc. stemmed from chronic use of you guessed it.
In my personal and incendiary opinion, most marijuana enthusiasts are unemployed and unmotivated losers. IndianEnts is my Exhibit A. And perhaps all the confessions in Trees that never make it to the front page for obvious reasons. (Though you can find them with the search engine of your choosing)
But it's not about cannabis. I hear the Dark Web was involved gathering intel from the confiscated electronics. People use Dark Web for harder drugs that are easier to innocuously ship to and fro.
Fun fact: A dose of LSD is literally indistinguishable from a tiny sticker.
c) Manipulation — These are some common manipulation tactics that I could recognize being deployed personally and in mass media in the case of Sushant Singh Rajput.
Isolation: Social and physical isolation is one of the most important things with victims of personal manipulation. I am sure I don't need to mention much here. All of the staff, from the CA to the cooks was changed, contact from family members ignored, social media interactions monitored, psychotropic drugs administered.
Gaslighting: All abusers will make you second guess yourself, and make you feel like you are going mad. You tend not to trust your judgements and are always on the brink of insanity. If we couple that with psychedelics that have been hinted with the chats, and the mention of Sushant going mad on an Europe trip at the painting of Francesco Goya's Saturn Devouring His Son, I am willing to wager that under the influence of something, this may have been an episode of a trip gone awry. I do not support the theory that this was an unravelling of some kind of mental disintegration. Just a bad trip. But it hints at the mental atmosphere.
Victimization : This one is one of the most obvious tactics we've seen so far. A lot of peudo-feminists have joined in support of Rhea Chakraborty, "a ruthlessly brutal media trial it is," they complain. If they're so attuned to the celebration and sovereignty of the female spirit, why have they turned a blind eye to the fact that there is reasonable speculation that Disha Salian may have been raped and thrown to death? It's happened before with Jiah Khan, and the same key players are involved here.
These morons ruin feminism and all the genuine struggle it stands for.
(Also, you cannot cry a media trial and then give a fabricated interview to one of the biggest news outlet in the country.)
Smear Campaign: Sushant's family, and the family lawyer Vikas Singh have been nothing short of civil, courteous and professional. I especially like Vikas Singh. He is as professional as lawyers are supposed to be. Calm-headed, no-nonsense, straight to the point and no fluff. It is the duty of the involved parties to not add in to speculation and disrepute. To lesser extent, even Arnab Goswami draws a line at baseless speculation and personal attacks. Keyword being baseless. You can see it with debates involving a friend to the SSR case, Nilotpal, who often gets personal and Arnab almost has to subtly reprimand him.
On the contrary, Rhea's campaign is so toxic and self-victimising, it's ridiculous. PR-fueled hot takes on toxic Bihari families, bringing up KK Singh's two marriages, bringing up SSR's mother's death due to depression, false sexual allegations on one of SSR's sisters, Bhatt, Chakraborty and the Bollywood PR machinery vilifying SSR's mental state, and peddling theories of suicide and emotional instability, getting a therapist to publicly support their stance, disgusting rumours about life insurance policies, theories of family conflicts, leaked video recordings of family reprimanding house staff etc.
And I am out of time. Sorry about the ramblings.
Ad meliora.

good piece from the FT on the rising conflict with China and the gradual American-European divorce happening since the decline of the USSR

Why America no longer looks to Europe
https://on.ft.com/3nwLbFb
The great transatlantic rift began long before Donald Trump—and will outlive his presidency
In 1831, Americans arrived in Sumatra on a vessel that it amused fate to call Friendship. As its captain haggled onshore for pepper — the island’s staple — some locals boarded, slew his first mate and plundered the cargo. Apprised of the raid, Andrew Jackson, the US president, the first not to come from Europe-facing Virginia or Massachusetts, sent a warship to Asia on a punitive mission. The ensuing violence scandalised Americans but did not, in the end, discourage them. The Sumatran expeditions were trailers for the opening of Japan and the conquest of the Philippines by the turn of the century.
That one-time Jakartan, Barack Obama, sought to bring about America’s “pivot to Asia”. When it stalled in 2013, the emissary he dispatched to shore it up was his vice-president Joe Biden. But both men should have known that it is a pivot back to Asia. A century before D-Day, it was Asian sand that was scored with US bootprints. Forty years before Bretton Woods, Theodore Roosevelt brokered a Pacific (and pacific) deal between Russia and Japan, becoming the first US president to win the Nobel Peace Prize.
We who cherish America’s commitment to Europe sometimes speak of it as eternal and all but encoded into nature. Hence the anguish when Donald Trump draws down US garrisons in Germany, or picks at the seams of Nato, or puts tariffs on European goods. Hence, too, that parochial tic: the damning of each US break with Europe as “isolationist”, even as other parts of the world get more, not less, America. In 2006, the Quad — a security forum of the US, Japan, Australia and India — did not exist. In July, some of its fleet held naval drills in what the Pentagon now calls, with a wink at Delhi, the Indo-Pacific. A rum kind of isolation, an observing China might have thought.
If the Atlantic is widening, it is not because of the caprice of one president. It is because Europe was never the sole or even main geopolitical draw on a nation that has had a Pacific coast for 200 years. Europe had no formal pact with the US until the Nazis and then the Soviets forced them into the partnership of convenience that we now read as a union of souls. When the last of those enemies dissolved in 1991, so did the bonding agent between two — how subversive it feels to state the obvious — vastly different places.
There have been schisms ever since: over Bosnia, Iraq, the Kyoto protocol, the International Criminal Court, digital taxation, the nuclear pact with Iran and the Covid-19 pandemic. For a rich and peaceful Europe, the US is no longer such an indispensable patron. For the US, Europe is no longer the strategic crux of the world. Beneath the high politics, trends in demography and public opinion on both sides of the water reinforce the estrangement. It is beyond the power of a President Biden, if elected next month, to reverse it.
US president Barack Obama, right, and Chinese president Hu Jintao pass a portrait of Harry Truman at the White House in 2011 © Getty Images More ominous than the catalogue of tiffs in recent decades is the mounting indifference. To live in Washington is to sense Europe at times all but slide off the Earth. It is invoked often enough, but less on its own terms than as a swing vote in the US-China showdown. Which way, wonder the locals, will the perfidious continent tilt? And even this hinge role it has to share with India. Of the 45 presidents, perhaps no two are less alike than Obama and Trump. Yet both have tried to turn America’s posture towards Asia. Both have struck the Europeans as disengaged. George W Bush before them was another cause of cross-Atlantic froideur. This is getting to be quite the run of bad luck.
If the divergence is structural, not personal, then France has been quicker to sense it than Britain or Germany, where Atlanticism can be an article of faith. Perhaps it is an aid to lucid thought about America to not have a large diaspora here.
Stream chart showing foreign-born population of the US, by region or country of birth from 1850 in both millions and as percentage of total Last year, in an interview with the Economist, Emmanuel Macron diagnosed Nato with “brain death”. As much as the line scandalised London and Berlin (it had much less effect here), the image of an organism that is living off muscle memory is apt enough. And if the alternative is to count on a Democrat in the White House, it is no alternative at all.
A President Biden would reaffirm Nato, perhaps, and certainly the Paris climate agreement. He would defrost relations with Germany at a stroke. But the North Atlantic of old — each side the other’s focus, their elites entwined — is not coming back. The call of Asia is too loud in Washington. For Europe, the challenge is to avoid mawkish threnodies for the “west”, and adapt to a process that might have unforeseen benefits.
A rife (and cross-partisan) notion in Washington is that Europe, mesmerised thus far by Chinese demand for its goods, will come to see “sense”. It will then fall unambiguously into America’s share of a bifurcating world. As a wager, it does at least go with recent form. Britain has reversed its decision to wave Huawei into its 5G system. Much was made when the EU named China as, among more benign designations, a “systemic rival”.
Beyond this, however, any assumption of loyalty is a complacent read-across from the cold war. Even if the 27-member EU were to form a — don’t laugh — coherent view on China, it would be characterised as one of heightened vigilance. That is not the same as enthusiasm for open-ended confrontation. The US and China seem bound for nothing less, and on terms that are now as ideological as economic.
The Washington in which I landed in the summer of 2018 was several months into a trade war. It was vicious, no doubt, but somehow reassuringly practical too. Among the neo-Roman grandeur was the bathos of washing-machine tariffs and soyabean shipments.
Having grown up under another Washington Consensus, the sight of two governments “agreeing” to cut their current account imbalance jarred. Trump’s idée fixe, that every transaction has a winner and a loser, is the near-opposite of trade theory. The speed and thoroughness with which his view on China infused America’s elites — political, diplomatic, corporate — was startling to see up close. For good or bad, it remains the central feat of his presidency. Call it electioneering, but Biden has felt compelled to match and sometimes exceed the rhetoric.
Trends in demography and public opinion on both sides of the Atlantic reinforce the estrangement Some hardening of the US line on trade was probably due. And material grievances can be finessed away. It is when “values” get involved that Europeans might start to research fortified bungalows in New Zealand.
The US-China feud has widened since 2018 from negotiable economics to first principles. And the Democrats have registered few qualms about the mission creep. It was to little dissent that Mike Pompeo pitted the “free world” against a new “tyranny” over the summer, in language that evoked Bush’s at the time of the Iraq war.
The dualism here, the black-and-whiteness, unnerved Europeans even in the prime years of Nato. Graham Greene lanced it in the snide, caricaturist but — there is no getting around it — sinisterly prescient novel The Quiet American. Among the clubland jokes about people who have “milk at lunch”, there was insight into the American faith in democracy as an end in itself. Coincidence, no doubt, but when Europe-born émigrés steered US policy (Henry Kissinger, Zbigniew Brzezinski), the stress was on cold interest.
Where it comes from, this moralist vein in US statecraft, is for a Chinese George Kennan to divine. If there is one in Washington, drafting a memo on the Sources of American Conduct, he or she might theorise that a non-ethnic nation gains its sense of self in opposition to something external. Alternatively, it is a byproduct of the religiosity that, while on the wane, distinguishes the US among rich countries. Or perhaps it is Europe, made risk-averse by its 20th-century traumas, that is unusual in its tentativeness.
Either way, we need not know the source of the idealism, or even dread it, to see that it is as Democratic as it is Republican. For Biden, Xi Jinping is a “thug” atop a “surveillance state”. His foreign-policy advisers are diverse and legion but united by a stress on values. Antony Blinken, an influential voice, wants them “back at the centre of our foreign policy”. Ely Ratner, who worked for Biden when he was vice-president, faults Trump’s China policy for its “total disregard for human rights”.
Spine chart showing percentage who think the current US president will do the right thing internationally in various countries We are left here with a conundrum. Trump the nationalist has joined a generational conflict with China. But Trump the cynic, indifferent to how other countries rule themselves, is also a check on it. A Democratic administration, or the next Republican one, is likelier to make this a clash of governing systems, and all the less containable for that.
The EU is hardly above righteousness but for all sorts of reasons — French raison d’état, German self-doubt, general mercantilism — it is rarely militant about it. Its impotence against democratic backsliders in its own club is a tawdry example of a mostly benign prudence. Far from bringing the US and Europe together then, China is likelier to tease out their distinct ways of seeing the world. “We have the right not to be outright enemies with our friends’ enemies,” said Macron, in an epigraph of French realpolitik.

In the cold war, non-alignment was never an option for Europe. Much of the continent was all bread queues and debris when it took Marshall Aid in exchange for US leadership. It is now wealthy and secure (which, in chiselling America’s share of the Nato bill, is Trump’s fair point). And the threat back then was as near as East Berlin. The second cold war, if it warrants such breathless billing, is not unfolding on European soil. The continent is a “player, not a playing field”, in the words of European Council president Charles Michel.
None of this is lost on the public. Last year, Europeans were polled as to which side, if any, their country should take in a US-China “conflict”. By crushing super-majorities, the answer was neither — 73 per cent of Germans felt that way. Of the few who picked a side, America beat China by 10 per cent to six. And that was before a pandemic which, according to Pew research last month, drained the continent’s respect for the US more than China. There is still plenty of evidence that Europeans identify with the democratic superpower over the autocratic one. That is not the same as wanting any part of a tussle between them.
Small multiple chart showing percentage who had a favourable view of the US in UK, France and Germany from 2000 to 2020 “It is time to stop pretending that Europeans and Americans share a common view of the world,” wrote Robert Kagan on the eve of the Iraq war. His point was that America, possessed of awesome power, believed in the usefulness of force. Europe, with much less of the stuff, saw everything in legal-bureaucratic terms. The passage of time has complicated his Mars-and-Venus metaphor: it was Europe that dragged a sceptical US into Libya in 2011. But on the subject of China, it holds well enough. The US, recently overtaken as the world’s largest navy, is defending a position as the number-one power. Europe isn’t. It would be strange if the two sides viewed China in quite the same way. And perverse if a continent so rich and storied could not eke out its own position.
The mystery is whether it can hang together without a doting US. Since Europe’s postwar integration took place under American auspices, it is natural to fear for the one without the other.
Or it was, until the summer’s Hamiltonian breakthrough. Two centuries from now, it is unlikely that Angela Merkel will serve as the star of a musical for middlebrow biens pensants. The EU’s new borrowing scheme is too piecemeal to match that of the first US Treasury secretary for drama. Still, not since 1992, when the euro was sired at Maastricht, has the project for continental union deepened by so much so quickly. The EU is gaining a triple-A-rated asset with which to fund its economic convalescence and, in time, other missions too.
The impetus for the reform came from the pandemic (Brussels tends not to waste a crisis). The political decisiveness owed something to Britain’s absence (it was the club’s historic foot-dragger). But what also concentrated minds was a sense that Europe was now on its own. Trump is the first US president to oppose the supranational project. And precisely because he does, the project has a new urgency.
For more than 60 years, Washington’s goodwill, sponsorship and constant attention freed Europe to integrate, yes, but also to excuse drift. There was always the “guarantor of last resort”, as Macron calls America, to fall back on. It looked after Europe’s territorial integrity. It gave its moral imprimatur — after the second world war, no small thing — to an idea of continental unity that might have otherwise lacked credibility. As a result, Europe could be tentative and incoherent to no great cost.
If Europe’s destiny is gradual neglect by the US, the Trump years have been an immersion tutorial in it That complacency ended with Trump’s election in 2016. An event that should have been a trauma has empowered Europe’s federalists. This, they can say, pointing to a chilly world, is what awaits us as disaggregated nations. The project has become less of an ideal than an existential must.
If Europe’s destiny is gradual neglect by an Asia-gazing US, then the Trump years have been a kind of immersion tutorial in it. The provisional lesson is that abandonment can have perverse advantages.
We will never find out either way, insist the more confident Atlanticists. Even if structural forces are prising Europe from America, they are as nothing against the immemorial substance that binds them. The trouble is eliciting a clear answer as to what this is.
The Nato charter cites “democracy, individual liberty and the rule of law” as a basis for the alliance. In 1948, few enough countries practised these things for the fact to define and unite them. As late as the 1970s, even, the majority of states were autocratic. But in a world where most are law-governed democracies of some flavour, what ties the US to Europe any more than to, say, the Quad?

Online gambling legislation and regulation. Starting your own gambling product.

Mobile gambling
If you plan to develop an app with the ability to deposit and withdraw real money, then such a product automatically falls into the category of gambling and you will need to license your business for successful operation.
Mobile and Web Based Apps
So let’s talk about the different kinds of online gambling apps available on web and mobile. We’ll be covering both free-play gaming apps and real money casino app games you can find for iOS, Android devices and web browsers.
Mobile gambling is more common for poker, casino, bingo, and skill games. They have advantages in terms of a low barrier to enter the market, instant liquidity, product knowledge, and marketing expertise, minimal infrastructure costs, and the ability to bring a brand to the market quickly. Consequently, this form of gambling does not sit neatly with jurisdictional boundaries. Multiple gambling opportunities are available, including betting on various events and markets, in a relatively simple format. Gambling products can also be integrated into betting on television shows or virtual racing and sports games as well as offering lotteries, bingo, poker and casino games.
Most Popular Gambling Apps
Sports betting, casino, poker and lotteries are the most popular forms of online gambling. However, other forms are available too. These include the following: Bingo, slot machines, different card games, roulette and other game of chance. One of the best things about online gambling and betting apps is the number of choices you have.

Sports Betting

Betting means making or accepting a bet on the outcome of a race, competition, or other event or process, the likelihood of anything occurring or not occurring, or whether anything is or is not true. Today most sports betting is done via mobile-friendly sites and apps.
Today most sports betting is done via mobile-friendly sites and apps.
The introduction of live betting for sports like soccer and tennis means that bettors who are sitting inside stadiums watching games can now pick up their mobile devices and find real-time betting value with the best sports gambling apps. This has really unlocked a door to the future of sports gambling and the popularity of online gambling apps.

Poker

Many sites offer free poker, where no real money is wagered, although in some cases players can accumulate credits that can be exchanged for prizes. This is the case why people are going to play for real money. There is an ongoing debate over whether poker should be classified as a game of chance or skill. The parameters of legal poker playing are still unclear and differ between jurisdictions. Since you are not gambling with money, I’m pretty sure under the law it’s just a video game for now.

Blackjack

Blackjack is the game of choice to many high-rollers and do you know why? Because blackjack is a challenging, logic and skill-based game where your thinking, strategy, and calculations determine the outcome of the game.

Bingo

Bingo is one of the most popular and socially accepted games in the world. Bingo is a traditional form of gambling that has seen considerable innovation in recent years. It is also the only form of gambling recognized in the Gambling Act that does not have a specific statutory definition, the Act providing simply that “bingo” means “any version of that game, irrespective of by what name it is described”. Bingo must be played as an equal chance game. For game to be classed as “bingo” it must meet the Act’s definition of “equal chance gaming” (as opposed to casino gaming). Thus, it: must not involve playing or staking against a bank, and must be a game in which the chances are equally favorable to all participants in the sense that each ticket or chance has the same probability of success as any other.
Licensed bingo is a well-regulated and socially responsible form of gambling that takes place in a safe environment. Many sites offer multiple forms of bingo with different features, types of games, and costs of play. These sites often cater specifically for women and some research suggests that they may appeal to markets who would not typically engage in traditional forms of gambling.

Slots

Slot machine is one of the most beloved game among the gambling community and it has been a part of the industry for a long time. They provide fun and entertainment and their simplicity allows gamers to start playing at once. This can play out in different ways depending on the machine you’re playing. For instance, there’s Pick a Fortune, a five-reel, 20 line game that puts players right in the studio of a television game show, including the potential to play a Deal or No Deal-style bonus round. A super trend over the past few years is mobile-friendly slot games. These apps and websites were developed to enable players to enjoy their favorite games on their smartphones at any time. Another dominant slot trend is licensed branded slots that are based on popular movies, television, and musicians.
Virtual Money vs Real Money
Let’s find out the difference between social gambling and real money gambling, as well as the differences between gambling through apps and gambling through a web browser. It can be quite confusing trawling through all the casinos, slots, and lotteries available, both through your mobile web browser as well as through mobile app stores, in the form of downloadable apps.

Virtual money

The main difference between virtual money and real money gambling is that the in-game virtual currency in social games and gambling-type games is used only like credits that are not paid out as winnings or anything given to player in cash, making these games exempt from gambling regulations.
Virtual money is loaded on user game accounts via in-app purchases in mobile applications or the game balance funding from a card via web based applications.

Real money gambling

Real money gambling via your mobile device is only allowed in countries where laws have been passed that allow for this type of gambling online, or there are no laws in place that prevent it. The payment systems are the legal way of services payment in the gambling app, performing as the intermediary between the gambling facility and the client. With their help, users replenish deposits and withdraw funds to personal accounts in financial institutions. If the application uses the payment system of a well-known brand, that gives players additional confidence in the resource. Nowadays, there is a wide range of payment systems, some of which operate all over the world, other systems are oriented towards the citizens of one or several countries. A number of services accept money of different world currencies, while others allow currency transactions of one state only.
What is an Online Gambling Licensing
The internet has a global audience, there’s no single piece of legislation that covers the legality of online gambling for the entire world. Mobile gambling doesn’t typically accept customers from every single country in the world. It often focuses on certain specific regions.
Instead, most countries have their own local laws that deal with the relevant legal and regulatory issues.
Ultimately, questions of legality all go back to the location of the casino or where the website operates out of. In closed regulatory systems, such as Italy, France, and the Netherlands, licenses, and advertising rights are limited to domestic providers, which must be located within their country’s geographical boundaries and these are only permitted to offer some types of products. Some jurisdictions, for example, Norway, Sweden, and Canada legalize and regulate online gambling, but this is limited to a single site that is owned by the government. Under such an approach, the government becomes the operator and regulator and all revenues are returned to the government.
Remote gambling is generally permitted. That means that an operator that is licensed may provide gambling services to citizens in the country via all forms of remote communication (and using equipment that may be located in the country or abroad). Equally, a remote operator may be licensed to offer gambling services to citizens in any jurisdiction in the world using equipment located in the country. The law provides that, for each type of gambling (betting, gaming, and participating in a lottery), there will be two forms of license available: remote and non-remote forms (land-based). If you provide facilities for remote gambling, online or through other means, and advertise to consumers you will need a license from the licensing jurisdictions or local licensing authorities. Before an online gambling site signs up its first customer, before it accepts its first bet before the first card is dealt, it must be licensed by a recognized governmental entity.
Certain regions in the world have specific legislation in place that allows them to license and regulate companies that operate online gambling sites or provide industry services (such as the supply of gaming software). These regions are referred to as online gambling jurisdictions or licensing jurisdictions.
Depending on what type of entertainment you are going to implement in your internet establishment, you will have to apply for the corresponding permissions. Online gambling laws in Europe vary from one country to the next. The industry is well regulated in some countries and less so in others. There are several online gambling jurisdictions located in Europe. Some of these are members of the European Union (EU), and thus subject to the various rules and regulations of that body, while others are independent. Each of these jurisdictions has an authority that’s responsible for approving gambling sites for licenses that enable them to offer their services legally. They also regulate their licensees.
Countries that Provide Gambling Licensing
Today there are lots of licensing jurisdictions located all over the world and offering different terms for their customers. Depending on the country, licenses can be local, international (distributed in several countries), have a different set of documents for registration, costs of registration and further support, various operating conditions and other special details.

Which gambling license is both internationally recognized?

The government of Ireland offers casino operators, software, and service providers in the gambling industry, with a gambling license that allows gambling operators to conduct business related to casino, lotto, and other gaming-related activities. Ireland Gambling License is one of the most popular license for online casinos worldwide. Ireland has long been recognized as one of the preferred locations for Online Gambling operators to base their operations. This success has been due to a combination of factors, such as a progressive legislative system, political stability, first-rate telecommunications facilities, and a well established financial services industry. A wide range of gambling sites operates out of Ireland including sports betting, casino sites, poker, bingo, and more.
In stark contrast, the UK is the largest regulated market for online gambling in the world, and corporations are already comfortable exploiting the intersections of gambling and gaming, betting in-play, social gaming, Bitcoin, financial trading and spread betting, betting exchanges, e-sports and, most profitably, mobile gambling. 40% and 60% of online gambling in the UK took place in Gibraltar.

Europe is home to the following online gambling jurisdictions: Alderney, Gibraltar, Isle of Man, Malta. Malta is currently the country that is most accommodating to gambling companies, and the license offers whitelisted online gambling in sports and casino games in many European territories. But takes an extreme amount of time in paperwork and background checks. Also, you pay 5% of all your gross profit to the EU.
Among countries offering gambling licensing services, the attention should be paid to Curaçao jurisdiction, which is considered to be one of the most promising for the online gaming business.
Curaçao Internet Gaming Association (also known as Curaçao eGaming) is both a regulator and a licensor, and its licensing works worldwide except Curaçao itself, USA, France and Netherlands. Using Curacao as an example, let us examine in detail the process of obtaining a license, the necessary documents and expenses.
How to get a License on Curaçao
  • Documents necessary for company registration:
  • criminal record;
  • passport scans;
  • bank account confirmation;
  • documents proving payments for utility services.
After the company is registered, an operator can apply for the license providing the following documents:
  • a document certifying the right of domain possession;
  • description of games planned to be used in the project;
  • a list indicating countries of potential operation;
  • illustration of server locations to be used in the project;
  • a copy of the agreement with a software provider.
Gambling license cost:
  • Bank account opening $1000
  • Company registration $3600
  • Company management per year $3600
  • Application processing fee $1000
  • License fee per year $4800
  • Equipment/software fee starting from $1500
  • Server maintenance per year $6000
Apart from that pay for technical support and maintenance every year. The entire license issuing process takes between 2-4 weeks. Curacao Internet Gaming Association (CIGA) also has the power to review a license and, if it finds that an operator has breached a license condition, has the power to impose a range of sanctions including revocation of the license.
Apple and Google Gambling Rules
You’ll be surprised at the limited number of real money gambling app options available on the AppStore and Google Play Store. Most real money casino gaming is done through gambler’s mobile web browsers and not through mobile gambling apps that you’ll find for iPhone and Android phones. Apple allows online gambling applications in a few forms, and not just in places where it is explicitly permitted. They do not allow any payments through the applications – those have to be done on the websites. Apple has far stricter developer guidelines for iOS apps than Google does for Android apps, so it’s fine to assume that whatever you choose to download from iTunes is usually safe, secure, and meets a certain standard.
Any real money casino in the iTunes app is required to have proper licensing and permissions before Apple will approve the app for use or downloads. While Google Play is technically regulated, it is much more loose in what can be hosted.

Apple Store

Gambling, gaming, and lotteries can be tricky to manage and tend to be one of the most-regulated offerings on the App Store. Apple has rules for apps that support real money wagering, including sports betting and poker. Those apps and lotteries must have necessary licensing and permissions in the locations where the App is used, must be geo-restricted to those locations, and must be free on the App Store, and Apple rate even simulated gambling apps as appropriate only for users 17-years-old and up.

Play Store

Google keeps the reigns tight. To be able to successfully upload apps to the Google Play store, developers need to have a valid license for the specific countries they are targeting and comply with their regulations. The app must be free to download and must prevent under-age users from gambling in the app. As a final precaution, all gambling apps are required to display prominent information regarding responsible gambling practices. This brings its policy in line with the Apple App Store.
Countries where gambling is illegal
It is also important to remember that while gambling is growing rapidly in many places, in others it is totally or partially prohibited. As well as in the majority of the US, sports betting is illegal in India, Pakistan, and China, three of the largest gambling markets in the world. Most countries have rules against gambling. Almost all Islamic countries prohibit gambling of every kind, but many turn a blind eye to online gambling or simply do not have regulations in place for this grey area.
In the United Arab Emirates, however, any kind of gambling is prosecuted. National lotteries are the only legal forms of wagering on the Asian country’s mainland. Cambodia, North Korea strictly forbids online and offline gambling amongst its own citizens but allows tourists to participate in these activities.
Qatar is the strictest country of all when it comes to gambling laws. All forms of gambling activities are considered illegal, and even sports betting is not permissible.
Starting your own gambling product
Numerous online casino platforms in the market offer fantastic casino games like bingo, poker, roulette, and many more.
If you have an idea, but don’t know where to start, we advise you begin with a Minimal Viable Product (MVP) to pilot your proof of concept for investors. MVP spotlights your core features and lets your investors know there are bigger and better things to come.
For MVP you do not need a large team, just a few people are enough to create a fully functioning prototype. In the case of successful numbers of your prototype, the further development of a full-fledged product will require more team, resources and time, however you will be sure that your development and your costs will pay off.

Ask Jerry the Time Traveler about the Future! AMA

Hi there,
Jerry is a man I met at the library. We started talking and he explained to me that he's from the future, the year 2137. He doesn't like our "primitive" computers and so is unwilling to do an AMA himself, but is fine sitting and reading while I ask him questions as per usual. You can find the first AMA here, and the second one here.
Currently I am sitting in the library with him and we're ready for your questions! This will likely be a shorter day than usual but we'll go for as long as we can.
---
Jerry was born in 2034 in the New Republic of Arcadia, existing in modern-day Oregon for the most part. He comes back from the year 2137, where the Earth population is roughly 12 billion, Luna (the moon's) population is roughly 1 million, and Mars' population is roughly 2,000.
World Map in 2137: https://imgur.com/qg55cXr (A little janky but best I could do. Fired up photoshop and opened a blank map, had him point and name each country that exists in his time, and this is as far as we got before I had to take off due to work. We were going to do borders but it was gonna be too time intensive. I'll try again next time.)
Major Events: (difficult remembering all of these, if more pop up I'll try and populate)
---
FAQ:
Do you believe he's a time traveler?
No, time travel isn't possible. I think he's an interesting person and I enjoy sharing the world he's built in his own head with others.
How does time travel work?
He's visiting a different dimension only slightly different from his, so anything he does here doesn't affect his time at all. The difference is, as he explained, equivalent to an atom on the other side of the universe having a slightly different charge and that's it. It's not enough to think he's from a timeline where Genghis Khan died as a baby or something.
Does he have any proof?
By intention, no. The best proof he has is his mind. Any question I have, no matter how specific, he has an answer for and I can tell he's not just making it up on the spot. He thinks for a moment but it's the kind of thinking you see a smart person do as they dumb down a topic for you. The only thing that's odd is his state ID, from our time, that's part of his "false documentation" so he can blend in and live here. He said they messed up and put his real name on it instead of his fake 21st century name. He showed it to me and it legitimately does say his first name is Kajjixi, with an equally odd last name.
Am I famous?
Probably not. Jerry doesn't keep up with celebrity news either way, and he and I both are tired of being asked if he knows who is in the future.
What should I invest in? Winning lottery numbers?
Don't invest in or buy lottery numbers based on anything said here. Jerry is not a time traveler and can't give you any more secrets to the future than a psychic could, which is to say they can't at all. He has cool ideas, but don't wager real money on it.
What happens with climate change?
According to Jerry, it goes pretty bad. Our oceans take the biggest hit and still haven't recovered by the time of 2137. By that time, over 50% of the species alive today have gone extinct in the wild, though many remain in captivity for reintroduction at a later time. Coral reefs are no more, the sea levels have risen a few inches on average and global temperatures are very high. Things seem to be going in a better direction, however, with massive CO2 condensers everywhere and desalination programs along most coasts. Most of our energy in the future comes from nuclear and solar power.

Jerry is back to answer questions about the future! AMA

Hi there,
Jerry is a nice man I met at the library. While reading a book on the Civil War, he asked me how it ended and then proceeded to get a new book. I asked where he comes from that he hasn't heard of the Civil War before, as he had a fairly standard American accent, and he said he comes from the New Republic of Arcadia in the year 2137.
... Well alright. I've been talking to him ever since, utterly intrigued by this world he's got in his head. Haven't had an AMA in a long while since he hasn't been at the library the last few times I've gone after I took a vacation, but he's back and more indifferent than ever to answer questions!

To the outside, the person appears as though they freeze before slowly fading away into a red color.

[TIMELINE] Analyzing The Past to Predict the Future - Everything We Should Consider on the Road to GTA VI

[TIMELINE] Analyzing The Past to Predict the Future - Everything We Should Consider on the Road to GTA VI
[QUICK MOD NOTE] This post was originally posted by Lenlfc on GTAforums, original post here. ALL CREDIT GOES TO HIM FOR ALLOWING ME TO DO THIS. It's extremely detailed and extensive, but it also gives a full look at previous leaks and speculation about GTA V, RDR 2, and the upcoming GTA VI. It's well worth your read if you're at all interested in speculation and leaks for GTA VI, considering it has a lot of information about how Rockstar has done things in the past, and how they may do things with GTA VI. It also has all of the confirmed information we have for GTA VI, like everyone has been asking for. Enjoy!
LENLFC will also be updating his original GTAForum's post often when new, reliable information comes out that is worth adding to his timeline.
TL:DR: This is very long. Please don't be mean if you think I went too far. I just wanted to be as detailed as possible, and compile as much evidence and proof as possible, so we can work out the most accurate and likely scenario. I've never done anything like this before. So please be kind.
Hi. So, Red Dead Redemption 2 has come and gone. Feels like forever we waited for it. Hard to believe it released almost 4 months ago. It's that time when many of us will start looking forward to the next Rockstar game. I have been on this site since the first leaks for GTA V popped up online. In that time, I have watched fairly quietly, barely getting involved. I've read a lot, and enjoyed it all, but never actively helped out. I want to warn you all that this post will be pretty lengthy, and as I'm not a regular poster, my formating or writing may not be the best. But I'm a big fan of Rockstar Games, and have a weird fascination with remembering small things. So I wanted to try my best to compile everything we know about how Rockstar go about making their games, what they have done in the past and do some crazy conspiracy theory like deducing to try to predict when, where and how we can find clues to GTA VI, and when they may announce or release it.
Firstly, I'd like to credit and thank Dan Dawkins. Many of you may not know who he is, but long story short, he's a journalist, and back in July 2011 he wrote an article in the magazine PSM3. In the article he predicted many things about GTA V (some correct, some incorrect) he researched all the available data and pooled it together, and used that to speculate about GTA V. That was a massive influence on me growing up, on how to speculate responsibly and use common sense to work out where a game or series may go next. So thank you, Dan!

FACTS

Now, onto the main topic. What do we know about GTA VI? Not a lot. Dan Houser recently said that they're thankful they're not releasing GTA VI while Trump is in office. While he's never actually quoted as saying they won't release it while Trump is in office, I think journalists used that for a catchy headline. But the point remains. GTA is heavily based on British satire of USA. The current political climate makes it very difficult for them to do this. If we take it literally, GTA VI won't release until 2021 or 2025, depending on how long he is in office. Unless I have my dates wrong. I'd be willing to bet they had 2021 in mind. However, my personal take on this was that Dan simply meant "thank god we're not releasing GTA VI in 2018" And knowing it'l take them years to even release their next game, Trump will no longer be President.
We also know Rockstar Games will make another GTA. And that is about it. If there is anything else concrete, that we know, that I have missed please let me know.

THE PAST

GTA V TIMELINE
Here's where we start digging and look to the past, what Rockstar has done before and try our best to work out their timelines and how they go about things. Now, in order to do this, I'd like to begin with GTA V, as that is when Rockstar Games transitioned into the one big game every 5 years, as opposed to the game every year studio.
April 20th 2009 the first ever build for GTA V was created. I'm not sure if this is when development officially began, or just the date of the first build. Either way, I doubt there is much difference. They were busy working on TBoGT at that point, having just released TLaD 2 months prior. This was discovered from the Build Log. I will go into detail on this later. However this wasn't discovered until 2014, I just thought it was worth putting here to stamp the timeline.
The earliest rumors for GTA V began on July 26th 2010, with reports of Rockstar researching locations in and around Hollywood. Rockstar declined to comment on this, saying they don't comment on "rumors and speculation". To this day we still don't know if this was legit, or otherwise. However the game did end up being set in Los Santos. So it was either true or coincidentally correct.
Next came the domain name leaks on February 25th 2011. That date might be off by a couple of days, but the original GTA V Leak Topic has it dated to the 25th. (Fun fact, this is the leak and topic where I signed up to GTAForums!) Very GTA sounding website names. After GTA IV introduced the internet to us, it was no surprise to think GTA V would expand on that, and the domain names registered sounded right out of a GTA game. This was proven true, as the websites did appear in game.
On March 8th 2011 more fuel was added to the GTA V fire, when the codenamed "Rush" casting call was leaked online. Like the website, they sounded like something out of a GTA game.
This was further expanded on the 29th of March when Take Two put out a private casting call, further hinting at development on GTA V being well underway.
October 5th 2011 In an Asked & Answered article, 2 users asked about the next GTA, with Rockstar replying with the following
“When are we going to see a new GTA????? #bestgameever” - received via Twitter“When's the new grand theft auto coming out?” - received via Twitter
Big, big shout to all Grand Theft Auto fans worldwide who we know are anxious to hear about what’s next for the franchise but we don’t have any news at this time. All we can say is, right now, we’re focused on our next upcoming releases which are Max Payne 3 as well as L.A. Noire for PC, Red Dead Redemption Game of the Year Edition and Max Payne for mobile devices. When and if we have anything to report regarding the Grand Theft Auto franchise, you know that we’ll do so here at the Newswire or on our Twitter or Facebook.
And then it happened. GTA V was officially announced on October 25th 2011 at 12pm BST, linked below.
https://twitter.com/RockstarGames/status/128788090969001984?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E128788090969001984&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fgtaforums.com%2Findex.php%3Fapp%3Dcore%26module%3Dsystem%26controller%3Dembed%26url%3Dhttps%3A%2F%2Ftwitter.com%2FRockstarGames%2Fstatus%2F128788090969001984%3Fs%3D20
This announcement came only 20 days after saying the above on October 5th 2011
This goes to show that Rockstar can say one thing, then surprise us weeks later.
The first trailer then debuted on November 2nd 2011
Everything past this point, until release I feel is not relevant to this discussion. It is more to do with post announce schedules and marketing, and when to expect news or updates or trailers for an already announced major game. If this topic does well, I could add it, or put it in a spoiler box so it's optional detail. Otherwise the next points worth talking about come into play upon release, and where Rockstar go after this.
September 17th 2013 GTA V finally releases. We rejoice.
October 1st 2013, two weeks after the launch of GTA V GTA Online launches.
This is where it gets interesting and complicated. We know now that their next game was Red Dead Redemption 2. However, Rockstar weren't finished with GTA V. Many people claim that Rockstar stopped caring about their fans and gamers, citing images like these
You can actually pinpoint the year Rockstar discovered microtransactions.
Now, I bring these up, as it is important to understand just how Rockstar now operate. Love it or hate it, but GTA Online has allowed Rockstar to not release games as often. Allowing them to work on one game as Rockstar Studios, where they all work together, instead of separate teams, like Rockstar North (GTA) and Rockstar San Diego (RDR) for example. The income from GTA Online has seemingly allowed them to spend 5 years working on Red Dead Redemption 2, perfecting a masterpiece. Allowing them to make the game they wanted, and allowing them to take all the time necessary to innovate and make a living breathing world even more so than GTA V did.
Some time in January 2014 the GTA V Build Log was found. Apparently it was on the game disc, and dedicated fans dug into the files and found it. I bring this up, as it reveals some key interesting details. such as the date of the first GTA V build/when GTA V development began. This is important as we can use this information later to try to work out when they may start their next project.
Throughout 2014 Rockstar were hard at work developing the PC, PS4 & Xbox One versions of the game. I don't know how much work that would be, but they weren't simple upres versions of the game. They included new features and plenty of big enhancements. The PC version was delayed into 2015 for added polish. And leslie Benzies took a sabbatical on September 1st, for 17 months.
The next key detail to note is from January 2016, I think. Leslie Benzies leaves Rockstar North. I feel this is important to note, as it could have delayed a lot of Rockstars plans, as a lot of staff left with him, Rockstar would go on to deal with a lawsuit which could only be an unnecessary distraction. There was a topic here on GTAForums discussing it. Needless to say the whole situation was pretty shady and the details don't really matter too much.
Rockstar had also planned single player DLC for GTA V, multiple datamines suggested 3 packs, as well as Ash735 on Neogaf confirming this. We can take this with a grain of salt, but if it were made up, then it's a pretty dull and uninteresting thing to make up.
They had also promised Heists for GTA Online, which was quickly becoming very popular. I personally believe (And this is where speculation begins) that the SP DLC was the unfortunate victim in all of this. They HAD to get the next gen versions out, as if you're launching an online game, you can't rely on players sticking with old consoles when the next gen consoles launch only 2 months after GTA Online launches. They had to get Heists out, which were promised before the entire game even released. More so than the SP DLC, which was just a closing line on a Newswire article, albeit multiple times. And development on their next game ramping up, going into full production, combined with the restructuring of Rockstar North due to Leslie Benzies leaving... SP DLC may have been an unfortunate victim.

He also had personal instagram photos from Rockstar San Diego, with captions strongly suggesting he was there for work. He denied it, saying it was just a photo taken outside that anyone could take. He quickly removed them. He was not credited in GTA V, but by RDR2's release he is indeed credited in RDR2.
Friday September 29th 2017 A reddit user posted a thread mentioning a recent leak which had been deleted. I do not know the date that it was originally posted. But it was over a year before the game released. And was entirely accurate. these leaks will serve a purpose later on.
December 25th 2017 GTAForums User @Jabalous brings to our Attention the actor Jorge Consejo, his previously mentioned Instagram selfie, and his CV/Resume. Which mentions min being in GTA 6, playing the role "The Mexican" (Featured).
CGI meaning motion capture work, etc.
In April of 2018, I'm not sure of the date, maybe the 18th? The article has since been removed. But I copied the article into a notepad file. Trustedreviews.com published an article based of a memo and some notes about the game. They claimed to have received this information in August 2017, but didn't post it due to fears it was fake. It wasn't until Rockstar released a screenshot that matched one that they had also received that they decided to publish this information, now believing it to be genuine. Here is an image of the text copy of the article (reddit formatting issues)
November 1st 2018 Rockstar sue TrustedReviews for £1M Essentially proving the leak to be true. Although the game itself proves it to be true, it's interesting that Rockstar sued for that much. Or sued at all.
January 6th 2019 Rockstar start hiring for next generation

-----------------------------------------------Unconfirmed Speculation-----------------------------------------------
January 30th (Specific date still debatable) Film Florida have guest Leah Sokolowsky on their podcast. She briefly mentions a recent change in her work
Recently as you're aware we've had a change in the types of productions that are coming to our state. So I've also been very fortunate to get a large client that has hired me to arrange basically site tours and visits. It's uh digital media company. And I've signed an NDA so I can't disclose who it is. But they've been exploring various areas of our state, and of other states in the south east. And I've been planning and arranging those visits for their personnel and that's been kind of a very interesting expansion of what I normally do, as well.
Here's the link to that quote.
It's suggested this is Take Two Interactive/Rockstar Games, as a reddit user claimed on October 6th 2019 scouts were looking around his area, and asked for permission to take photographs of the building. Which was later followed up by a photograph of an alledged document/contract as proof on October 8th 2019
-----------------------------------------------End of Unconfirmed Speculation-----------------------------------------------
February 13th 2019 VP of product development Jeronimo Barrera departs Rockstar Games after 20 years. This might not seem anything significant, but it's one of his quotes that I think it very important.
"If I had stayed at Rockstar it would have been more GTAs, more RDRs and less of this other stuff going on out there right now." While that is nothing concrete. It does indicate that Rockstar will be working on Red Dead and GTA for the foreseeable future. That won't surprise many of us, but it's just a little detail that gives us hope that GTA is next, and not another franchise like Bully, L.A. Noire or Max Payne, for example.
April 18th 2019 a former Rockstar India employee has mention of creating vehicles for GTA V and upcoming GTA 6 in his artstation resume Thanks to ApolloThunder's post.
Now those are the most important details I feel. Now I may have missed some other details people might find important. In August of 2017 the stunt actor Tim Neff was involved in a alleged leak for RDR2 & GTA 6. It was quickly 'debunked' Although many believed there were holes in the methods used to debunk it. And his removal of Instagram photos taken at Rockstar San Diego was suspicious to many users. I do not believe it holds enough water to use it as any evidence. But we can use it to speculate.
July 9th 2019 Jorge Consejo likes and quotes a tweet about him being in GTA 6

Now We Use All This Information to Speculate

The first clues we should look for are reports of Rockstar scouting locations. We know from articles and or interviews that Rockstar take thousands of photographs when creating their worlds, so any reports of Rockstar Staff i researching locations should be a very good indication. However, they can be very secretive.
Same goes for Rockstar or Take Two registering domain names or sending out casting calls. So far we've heard nothing of the sort. again, we don't always hear these things. I don't recall hearing anything about casting for RDR2 at any point between 2012 & 2016.
Combined with the fact that Rockstar only just released RDR2 4 months ago. I think it's pretty safe to sat development on their next game hasn't fully begun yet, or will do very soon. If we look back to the build log for GTA V, they created the first build on April 20th 2009. pretty much one year after GTA IV released. By that logic the first build for GTA VI would have been created in September 2014, right? Well, considering they had to work on the next gen and PC versions for so long. I'd wager they started much, much later. We know that these days Rockstar operate as Rockstar Studios, all working together on one game at a time. But if the NeoGaf user is to be believed, pre production for GTA VI began in 2012, which is actually entirely believable. As Rockstar began work on RDR2 almost immediately after RDR1. "In early 2011, Dan began chatting with Rockstar San Diego about how Red Dead Redemption 2 would look and who the characters would be. Late that summer, he says, he had a “broad outline and rough flow of the game defined.” By fall 2012, his team had completed rough scripts for many of the game’s missions and started doing read-throughs on video conference calls with directors of game play, art design, and animation from Rockstar offices around the world. " Source
Now, unlike Red Dead Redemption, Grand Theft Auto is not a game about specific characters, like RDR is with John and Dutch's gang. So It's safe to say after GTA V, the Housers did not sit down and come up with scripts or ideas for GTA 6 revolving around those characters. But never say never. They could use this as an opportunity to bring back Michael Franklin & Trevor, working of some of the ideas for the Story DLC for GTA V, instead of scrapping it entirely. For the first time ever, GTA could be a direct sequel using the same protagonists. This however, I believe to be incredibly unlikely. But I thought it was worth mentioning.
So, they've finished RDR2. What Are Rockstar doing now? I believe they're hard at work on the PC version of the game. Many people don't believe it will release on PC, citing the fact that RDR1 never released on PC as evidence. I don't believe that is fair, as we know RDR1 was a mess, and was in such a bad state that they were lucky to release it at all. Rumours and alleged leaks stated the game was a coded mess, and they weren't willing to go through all the hassle of porting it to PC. We also know PC games typically have a high paracy rate, and Rockstar aren't fond of spending all that development time and cost on such an effort for little reward. Here's a clip of Lazlow talking about releasing their games on PC, and joking wanting to make their money back first. It's from 2010, right before RDR1 released. I think he was making a joke, but hiding the truth in there. Which leads me to believe that RDR2 could come to PC, but in order to make their money on that, also release it on PS5 & the Next Xbox, like they did for GTA V. Considering the gap between GTA V on PS3 & 360 and GTA V on PC (19 months) we could see a similar gap with RDR2 on PC. If that is the case, we could see a PC release in May 2020. At which point next gen consoles would likely have been announced, assuming Sony repeat their February reveal as they did with PS4. Or soon to be revealed at E3 a month later. It's not beyond the realms of possibility that they re release on Next gen with native 4K on PS5, higher frame rates, or other enhanced features. Next gen consoles will be backwards compatible, but if they want to keep RD Online going, a newer version with higher player counts could be a good option.
Speaking of next gen consoles, until specs are set in stone, I don't think Rockstar will announce anything. Dev Kits are allegedly being sent to some developers right now. Sony first party studios are already working on PS5 games. Guerilla, for example. I'd wager Sony's relationship with Rockstar is a good bet to think they have them, too. So, what does this mean?
Well, let's look at when Rockstar announced RDR2. 18th October 2016. 18 months after the PC release of GTA V, 3 years, 1 month after the initial release of GTA V. Lets assume they stick to a similar pattern, both GTA V & RDR2 were announced in October. It could be a good bet for what month to expect an announcement. However, GTA IV was announced in May 2006, with Peter Moore's infamous Tattoo. So...
Now let's look at when Rockstar started hiring for RDR2, which was September 2014. It took them 2 years to announce their next game. And they had the base map planned out within 19 months. We just don't know when the photo of the map was taken, just when it was leaked to the public (april 2016). But we do know Rockstar always start with the world. For GTA V, that discussion started as GTA IV was wrapping up – almost five years ago – although the latest game has been in full production for just three years.
“It comes from the idea first,” Benzies tells us in his office at the studio.
Where is it going to be set is the first question. Then that defines the missions; you’re doing different things in LA than in New York or Miami. The map and story get worked up together, and the story is a basic flow of how it works out so you can layer the missions in. Source
I think we can safely say that Rockstar already know where the game will be set, and Aaron Garbut is already hard at work at creating a concept of a map. If he hasn't already.
Based of that information, I'd say Rockstar are hiring for their next game, which will be PS5 and Next Xbox exclusive, Likely to be GTA 6, and will need 2 - 3 years of development before they are able to reveal it with a trailer. Putting the game at a 2021 - 22 reveal, with a 2023 - 24 release. I do believe the upcoming generation, and Rockstars desire to outdo themselves every time will only slow them down. Their games take so long to develop, and I can't see them putting out GTA 6 in the same timeframe as GTA V, from GTA IV. More likely to be similar, if not longer than GTA V to RDR2.

The Leaks

Remember when I said the leaks would serve a purpose later on? I find it highly suspicious that Rockstar had leaks as substantial as they had for RDR2, when they never had anything to that level before. They are usually incredibly watertight. So let's speculate as to why...

The Benz.

Isn't it strange how such a long time influential figure at Rockstar North was fired, and then leaks start popping up for their next game? It's no secret that there was more to his firing that we initially thought. Things went really bad between The Benz and The Housers. I think when he left the company, and many of his staff left, too. A lot of disgruntled employees may has decided to spill the beans on their next game out of spite. The entire game map leaking 6 months before the game was even announced, Epilogue spoilers down to finite details such as building a house or birthing a foal? Way too specific, and that's never happened for a Rockstar game before. I just find that suspicious.
So, why is that relevant to GTA 6? Well, it may end up not being relevant at all. But then I remembered the leak from last year, that stated GTA 6 was set in Vice City. Back then, I didn't believe it at all, as it was way too detailed for a game that wasn't even announced, and wouldn't be announced for at least 2 more years. Likely double that. Plus why did they choose The Know? And an anonymous source is always suspicious. But hey, nobody would be dumb enough to give their actual identity if it were legit.
But then I started thinking a while ago, at how detailed the RDR2 leaks were, and maybe, just maybe the person who tipped off The Know was legit, and the info was based of what was in pre production from 2012 [Unofficial Source]. The more I thought about it, I realized that Vice City, with the concept of crossing the border to South America is a simple enough concept that could have been decided upon during pre production (the world is the first thing they decide, remember?)

Why Vice City

2 reasons why it's starting to feel like a likely location. Reason one, GTA Online. They introduced businesses and gunrunning into GTA Online, and a lot of people enjoy that stuff. Vice City would be a great location to create content around that concept. I don't believe Rockstar would pick a location based on what would make Online popular, but after GTA Online's huge popularity after GTA V, they'd be stupid to ignore it. Reason 2 was the quote Dan Houser gave about not releasing GTA 6 during Trumps presidency. Again, I believe it's taken a little out of context, but it's his words about satirising America is what caught my eye.
"Both intense liberal progression and intense conservatism are both very militant, and very angry. It is scary but it’s also strange, and yet both of them seem occasionally to veer towards the absurd," Houser said. "It’s hard to satirize for those reasons. Some of the stuff you see is straightforwardly beyond satire. It would be out of date within two minutes, everything is changing so fast." Source
Then there was this quote from Leslie Benzies, also covered in The Knows video:
IGN Source
Any chance that Vice City might return in a future GTA?
It is always a possibility. There are a few references to the city in our current-gen GTAs so it is part of that HD universe, and it is certainly somewhere we would love to revisit. However Vice City, perhaps more than any other GTA game, was as much about the era as the setting. Miami in the 1980’s is so iconic it would feel strange to revisit the city in a different time period.
exploring grand theft auto vice citys lasting impact on gamer culture with rockstars leslie benzies city cover. Of course at some point we would like to have one big world containing all our cities and let the player fly between them and revisit their favorite areas, and in that context reimagining Vice City would be very interesting.
So according to Rockstar, albeit someone who is no longer at Rockstar, it would be strange to go back to Vice City in a modern day setting. If you combine that with what Dan Houser said about parodying America today, and how difficult that would be, is it possible that the next game could be set in the past? Again, combining those quotes, with alleged leaks, and the possibility for fun and exciting gameplay and Online experiences... Vice City is an incredibly likely setting.
The only problem is GTA 6 going into pre production in 2012. If the location was decided upon then. It would either be a happy coincidence, or they may have changed the location. Or, it never was Vice City, and this speculation is clever, but ultimately wrong.
One key piece of information is the Neogaf user, who allegedly states that it WON'T be Vice City. Citing that production notes going around when he still worked there stated possible locations and concepts. And that it is likely one of the 4 options listed in the quoted thread.
Small town gta - tight stories, scheduled characters, ridiculous levels of ambience, every home interior modelled. Every building enterable. More realism - if your wanted you are on the run for a while.
Vegas 1970s- CASINO?
Somewhere snowy - chicago/detroit
Mexico City
You have to consider that what they may have decided in 2012 changed, due to the popularity of GTA Online. They could have chosen a smaller, more detailed interactive world. But due to Online, decided they needed a larger world. Or the location wasn't right due to modern politics and ability to satarise, etc.
I do think GTA could return to the past eventually. Sam Houser has an incredible knowledge of pop culture, and is very intelligent. It would work well for them to go back to an older setting for a GTA game again. That isn't proof of that, or even a solid reason for them to do a prior setting. His knowledge can be used in any setting, past or present. But it's an interesting piece of information to think about.
Another possibility is Dan's words were as simple as GTA 6 won't release while Trump is in office, and therefore GTA 6 will be set in the present day, but by then the political climate may have settled down, or they think/hope things will be different by then, and what they choose to parody will be easier. i don't know.

How about Las Venturas?

For the past few months, I've been thinking about the possibility of GTA 6 being set in Las Venturas. It's one of the locations mentioned as a possibility by @Ash_735 It's also a location that would be quite large, although not hugely diverse. However creative freedoms could solve that. If they return to a past setting as theorised. Then Las Venturas in the 70's or 80's could be seen as a pretty cool option. Like a lot of people, I'm a fan of Joe Rogan. Recently he had a guest on his podcast, Bob lazar. Whether you believe him or not is irrelevant. But he tells some interesting stories about working near Area 51, and working on alien UFO's. that really got me thinking... Wouldn't that be a perfect location for Rockstar to have some fun with? GTA V and RDR2 both featured UFO easter Eggs. There was a lot of mysteries tied to Mt. Chiuliad and Fort Zancudo. Can you imagine Area 69 returning, and what Rockstar may do with that? Now I fully understand that saying they may do a certain location, based of nothing other than easter eggs is a bit silly, but what else do we have? However, it does tie in with the notes (Vegas 1970's Casino?). Before RDR2 we never believed Rockstar would create a game, and build of a previous games map. After RDR2, we now know it's possible. I'm still not convinced they'd do it with GTA, as the GTA series is always an island, whereas RDR1 was a landlocked location. However, it is possible, however unlikely that they could build of Southern San Andreas and go east to Las venturas.

This is good news not only for cricket fans in India, but also for all cricket fans and fans around the world. Most people will need to go through a period of adjustment and many things have changed, mainly due to the effects of the entire COVID-19 epidemic. However, not everything has changed about IPL and the Indian world of cricket.
One of the things that hasn't changed for [IPL](mailto:https://alldatmatterz.com/article/3596/ipl-2020-all-you-need-to-know-about-the-match) fans is that they can still bet on games as normal. However, if you are an online sports bettor, you will need to ensure that you are only placing your wager with real, legal and legitimate betting sites. Therefore, it will be worth going to the trusted review sites and reading reviews of the leading IPL betting sites in India so that you can find the betting site or app that suits you.
So, with one of the biggest cricket tournaments in the world now back on the field, what can fans expect? What changes will you see? What are the things that await them? Here are the things you need to know about Indian Premier League 2020 season.
Site
One of the biggest changes to this year's IPL season is that the entire season will take place outside India. All games will be played in three different locations within the United Arab Emirates.
The matches will be held in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah. These are the specific stadiums where the matches will be played:
. Dubai International Cricket Stadium
. Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium (Abu Dhabi)
. Sharjah Cricket Stadium
Of all the matches, 20 will be played in Dubai, 20 will be played in Abu Dhabi and only 12 will be played in Sharjah.
Duration
IPL 2020, which is also the league's thirteenth season, opened on September 19. Other than the location, the other major change was that it did not open with a large opening ceremony and large number. The matches will be played in a robin format mixed between all participating teams, and the season will end on November 10, 2020, if the current schedule is followed.
The opening match was the defending champion Mumbai Indians match against last season's final, the Chennai Super Kings. I played this game in Abu Dhabi. The final game site has not been announced.
Participating teams
This IPL season will see a total of eight teams compete in Free For All. The first four teams to collect the highest scores after all matches will be the teams that advance to the playoff match and compete for the 2020 League and Cup Final.
The eighth franchises to be played this season are those of Mumbai Indians (MI), Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Kings Eleven Punjab (KXIP), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Rajasthan Royals (RR), Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Delhi Capitals (DC). The pressure is expected to be high on the Indians in Mumbai as they were the champions last season.
Where do you see an IPL?
All games from the 2020 IPL season will be available to stream on participating broadcast partners, depending on which country you are currently in.

Gambling Games In India

Gambling games and India:

Games of chance have always attracted passionate players and the appeal of Lady Luck never seemed to dwindle. They have thrived for thousands of years, even before written history and up to modern times when we can indulge in gambling on our electronic devices without even having to walk to the nearest casino establishment. Games have changed and flourished, but the passion for playing remained the same. India is a country that boasts a rich history when it comes to gambling and still nurtures a strong passion for it in various forms and guises. That said, it’s well worth taking a glance at the origins of casino games and how and where it all began.

Gambling stories of ancient India
The Ramayana (one of two major Sanskrit epics of ancient India) cites certain forms of games of chance believed to date back as far as 7300 BC. It describes gambling boards, believed by some to be the game of chess, as well as gambling with dice. The popular saying ‘to lose one’s shirt’, meaning to lose money, originated in ancient India. The old Sanskrit texts compare trees that have been stripped of their fruit to defeated gamblers who lost their clothes and ornaments in a wager.
While the Ramayana casually mentions gambling and does not condone it in any sense of the word, the second epic (the Mahabharata) tells a different story. The main antagonist, Shakuni, arranges a dice game against king Yudhishthira whom he cheated out of all his wealth and kingdom. When another antagonist, Duryodhana, insisted that there was no place for two crown princes in the kingdom, another dice game was arranged which ended in the exile of the royal family.

First Gambling Devices
Buddhist texts mention Indians gambling with nuts as dice as early as 300 BC. Apart from being fond of dice, Indians developed a taste for gambling on animals. At first, ram and cockfights were all the rage which was followed by the more sophisticated horse racing later. What is interesting is that while Europeans are generally given credit for developing certain games of chance, most of the earlier versions of gambling devices had Indian symbols on them.
Further Progress
The 15th century witnessed the rise of legal gambling houses all across India. They were heavily regulated to make sure the games were fair and square so that the players would willingly submit their dues to the king. This was the beginning of the first gambling tax.
When the British introduced cricket to India in the 18th century, Indians fell completely in love with the game. Cricket paved the way for sports betting which flourished in the country until the British took over and passed the Gambling Act in 1867 which outlawed all games of chance. Although they couldn’t abolish the games which still went on in secret, India never looked favorably on gambling again.

Present-day Gambling
The perspective of the Indian government on gambling is that it is the temptation that lures players to bet beyond their means, ruining their lives and their families. India’s 29 states and seven Union territories have the authority to decide whether to legalize gambling or not. Each state has a different legislative council and even though most of them do not support it, they do allow some forms of it, such as betting on horse races and the lottery. Since gambling restrictions are still in effect to a large extent, many have turned to online options and can choose from some of the best online casinos for India to scratch that itch. Almost 40% of internet users in the country have admitted to spending some of their time playing online casino games with no particular intention of earning large sums of money, but just to have fun and pass the time.
The history of India, which is almost 4000 years long, is brimming with amusing anecdotes of gamblers winning and losing in their favorite games. However, the future might not have as much room for such stories, since the gambling ban is still in effect. The Indian government still doesn’t trust its people to use their own judgment and roll the dice deciding their own fate. If the rules should ever change, the casino industry will be able to boost the Indian economy to a great extent. The people will enjoy their games while the country reaps the benefits. Some would say, a win-win situation.

Mongol Apologia – How Genghis Khan Made the Modern World

In Dan Carlin’s Hardcore History podcast on the Mongols, he recounts taking a class in college on Genghis Khan where he wrote a paper about some of the economic benefits of the Mongol Empire’s reign, and his Chinese professors gave him a bad grade for overlooking the tens of millions of people the nomads killed to acquire their massive empire. Carlin argued that the Mongol death toll wasn’t the point of the essay and it was unfair to grade him that way, but the teacher said it was morally inexcusable to overlook blatant genocide in this context.
I had a vaguely similar encounter in college, but in the other direction. I took a class on Mongol history taught by a professor who was famous in the field (he had spent years unsuccessfully searching for Genghis Khan’s body in Mongolia), and he used to make good-natured jokes about how one of his TAs was an unabashed Mongol fan. The TA didn’t just think the Mongols were interesting, he genuinely believed they were a force for good in the world, and when giving lectures he would go on at lengths rattling off the accomplishments and stats of the Mongol Empire, only to be occasionally interrupted by the main professor who would remind everyone that the Mongols probably killed a higher percentage of the earth’s population than any military force in history.
I just finished listening to the audiobook of Jack Weatherford’s book, Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World. When I started it, I wondered if the publisher forced that rather click-baity title on Weatherford. After all, though it’s a well-written and entertaining account, it is a fairly straightforward historical survey of Genghis Khan’s life and legacy. The book never concisely states what the “modern world” is or how exactly Genghis Khan made it.
But now that I finished it, I think Weatherford may have chosen the title after all, because he is about as pro-Mongol as one can get. And though the book is more of a historical account than an argument for a grand historical/cultural/societal explanation for the modern world, there is a faint outline for such a thing somewhere in there.
Even though I don’t totally buy it, I’ll do my best to explain Weatherford’s argument. I’ll also try to explain how Genghis Khan was so awesome (at least in a purely amoral, achievement-based sense) and why he’s one of the most famous people in all of history.

Old Mongolia and Temujin
Genghis Khan, who was known as “Temujin” in his early life (Mongols tend to have one name), was born in 1162 in a rough part of the world.
Late 12th century Mongolia probably would have been described as a shit hole by contemporary civilized Chinese people. If you factor in wind chill and the Gobi Desert, Mongolia is somehow both the coldest and hottest place on earth. With no resources but grass, goats, and horses, a brutally tough and entirely nomadic civilization emerged. There were no cities, no written languages, no formal education system, and basically no economic production besides the aforementioned goats and horses. The only metal or jewels to be found were stolen, usually from the Chinese is the south. The Mongols may very well have been the poorest people in Eurasia.
Fortunately for the Mongols, they were incredible fighters whose mobility, discipline, and tactics outmatched even the mighty Chinese, which led to centuries of successful pillaging of outlying towns. Unfortunately for the Mongols, like virtually all other nomadic people, they never had the manpower, expertise, nor technology to take walled cities. So the Chinese developed a containment strategy for dealing with their nomadic neighbors. Depending on China’s condition at the moment, they would fight, buy off, or negotiate with the nomads. The smartest diplomats would try to sow dissent in the Mongol ranks and make them fight each other, which wasn’t exactly difficult because…
This Mongol civilization could be categorized as a low-trust society. The populations could be nominally divided into tribes/clans which consisted of extended families, though these tribes were further broken down into smaller and smaller family units which nomadically roamed in groups of dozens, hundreds, or sometimes thousands. Occasionally the “Khans” of tribes would call together the warriors to go on raiding expeditions abroad, but most of the time the smaller family groups would ruthlessly harass each other, leading to endless cycles of blood feuds and retributions.
The process of mutual antagonism between these units was so routine that an informal warfare system developed. During part of the year, everyone would implicitly agree to peace, and they’d hang out together and go on hunts and trade horses and do nomad stuff. Then in another part of the year they would launch sneak attacks on each other where the unstated norm was for all the men to hop on their horses and flee, thereby leaving their women behind to be raped and/or turned into concubines, and their children to be enslaved, and their meager possessions to be looted. But then once the men got away, they would form up a war band, wait a few weeks, and attack back, hoping to inspire the same “flee-and-leave-everything-of-value-behind-to-be-raped-plundered-and-enslaved” process.
(One of Temujin’s big innovations that propelled his rise-to-power was convincing his warriors to not settle for raping and looting, and instead chase down and slaughter the fleeing men.)
At first, Temujin grew up as just another random Mongol kid, meaning his father was murdered, his mother was kidnapped, and he was enslaved. For a while, Temujin lived with his mother and six siblings as non-tribal outcasts, making him one of the poorest people in one of the poorest civilizations. He and his mother were said to have worn clothes made of stitched together field mouse skin and ate animal carcasses left behind by other tribes. Unsurprisingly, this process made Temujin a pretty tough guy, and sometime in his mid-teens, he and another brother murdered his older half-brother who had begun to call the shots in their family.
I won’t go into too much detail about the political mechanics of Temujin’s rise to the head of the Mongol tribes, because it’s a blur of tribal warfare, betrayal, and murder that I can’t keep track of. What I want to focus on is Temujin’s vision. Suffice to say, it’s amazing that a random outcasted Mongol accumulated power and rose through the ranks until he managed to unify one of the most disorganized people on earth for the first time in history.
Much like Napoleon, Genghis Khan is best known for his military glory, but arguably his administrative accomplishments were even more impressive.

The Vision of Genghis Khan
After nearly two decades of tribal warfare, Temujin rose to the top of the Mongol ranks. Rather than just become another Khan, he became “Genghis Khan,” which means something like “Khan of Everything.” How did Temujin unify the roughly 1 million tribal Mongols spread out across a vast steppe under a single ruler after centuries of non-stop stealing, murdering, kidnapping, raping, and blood feuding?
The short answer is that he destroyed and rebuilt Mongol society along more rational lines. On the one hand, it seems incredibly difficult to get such untrusting people to put aside their differences and work together, but on the other hand, maybe Mongol society was so chaotic that it was crying out for order.
And that “order” was something sort of, kind of, a little like meritocratic secular liberalism.
(These are my words, not Weatherford's, but I think that's what he was going for.)
Here’s how it worked:

  1. Meritocracy
Temujin broke down the old family-based social structures and rebuilt Mongol society on unified, but meritocratic grounds. Not only were the tribes abolished, but all tribal subdivisions as well. No longer would people marry or kill each other based on whether they were “white bones” (close family) or “black bones” (distant family). Once Temujin took over, every man, woman and child was simply Mongol. No more and no less.
Temujin led by example. When he won his final victory against his tribal enemies and erected his new government, he purposefully filled all his top administrative and military positions with non-family members. And not just any non-family members, but nearly all were men from the dregs of society – the Mongol equivalent of peasants – who had risen with Temujin because of their military skill. These guys were no joke - while Temujin was undoubtedly one of the greatest strategic generals in history, he also may very well have had one of the best lieutenant corps ever as well.
This is a point that I wish the book had gone into more detail on. Basically, my understanding is that when Temujin finally won in Mongolia, he rounded up all the aristocrats in the enemy tribes and executed them, but left the peasants alone. Then he turned around on all of his aristocratic allies and told them that they were no longer aristocrats. The new Mongol nation doesn’t have aristocrats. Granted, many of these supporters were given military and administrative positions, but the inherited rights their ancestors had enjoyed for centuries were abolished.
This anti-aristocrat streak was brought to future conquered lands as well.
In one of my favorite part of the book, Weatherford described how European feudalism was basically a warfare system where aristocrats would be super nice to each other while they sent legions of peasants to horrifically butcher each other. So if a lord was cornered on a battlefield, he would be captured and then hang out in a nice castle until he was ransomed; meanwhile the peasants and men-at-arms would routinely torture prisoners to death in full view of enemy armies to inspire fear on behalf of their lords.
The Mongols inverted this process. When they conquered cities, the standard practice was to round up the X percentage of wealthiest people and execute them. They might also slaughter the peasantry too if they put up a fight, but at least the Mongols were generally laxer about it. The result was the Mongols had a tendency to systematically decapitate the social and political systems of the places they occupied, to be replaced by sweet, sweet Mongol meritocracy.
The result was a society where talented, loyal individuals rose to the top. Weatherford gives the sense that Temujin truly did not give a shit who someone was as long as he did his job well. One of his top generals was a guy nicknamed “The Arrow,” because he shot Temujin with an arrow during the tribal wars, but upon being captured, was recruited into the general staff. Eventually Temujin’s military and civil administrations would absorb many of the best and brightest across China, India, Korea, the Middle East, and Russia, paying no regard to nobility, religion, or even disposition, as long as tasks got done.
In their own weird way, the Mongols were uniquely humble as far as empire builders go. They knew what they did and didn’t do well. They knew they had a kickass military machine, so they rode around the world kicking ass. They knew Genghis Khan was god’s chosen ruler, so they put him in charge of everything. But they also knew the Chinese had the best engineers, so they used captured Chinese engineers to build siege weapons and take down Chinese walls. They knew Muslims were the best merchants, so they assembled Muslim merchant caravans to import goods from abroad. They new the Uighurs had a great writing system, so they made Uighur scholars invent a new Mongol writing system. They knew Koreans made great bureaucrats with their paper, so they imported Korean bureaucrats. Etc.
Meanwhile, despite building the largest empire in history, there are precious few remnants of Mongol art, architecture, production, or culture throughout their old imperial territories, not because it was all destroyed, but because they never built any of it in the first place. The Mongols knew they weren’t good at it.

  1. Secularism
According to Weatherford, the Mongol Empire was the first state in history to offer total religious freedom. Any and all religions were not just tolerated, but actively promoted by the Mongol state via tax exemptions and state funding. It’s hard to tell if Temujin and the Mongols came to this stance because they were uniquely tolerant or uniquely apathetic.
Genghis Khan was a Tengrist, which was the traditional faith of the Mongols. Tengrists believed that the sky itself was the highest god, though there were also various natural spirits in the world worthy of worship. However, Genghis Khan was also arguably sort of, kind of, a little Buddhist, Taoist, Muslim, and Christian, as he went through the spiritual rituals of all these religions and regularly consulted with their holy men.
Dan Carlin speculates that Temujin was playing Pascal’s Wager. We don’t have many records of Temujin’s own words, so we can’t say for sure what his true religious leanings were, but at the very least he seemed open to the viability of every religion he stumbled upon. Maybe at heart he was a Roman-style polytheist who considered all gods as real and existent, and so he may as well appease them.
Regardless of what Temujin actually believed, the Mongol religious tolerance was remarkable. At a time when pretty much every corner of Eurasia was dominated by a religious group which used military power to enforce strict adherence to the chosen dogma, the citizens of the Mongol Empire could worship any way they pleased.
Centuries before the Pope was burning heretics at the stake for expressing true scientific beliefs Spanish Inquisition, the Mongols were hosting state-sponsored religious debates. One Great Khan literally invited a Christian priest, a Muslim Imam, and a Buddhist monk to his capital city, and had them debate a series of theological issues in front of him and a crowd. The monk got off to a bad start as the priest and imam formed a temporary alliance against his esoteric bullshit, but in classic Mongol form, it didn’t matter in the end, because everybody got super drunk and the judges lost track of who said what.
The result of this religious tolerance on the Mongols themselves was a society-wide fracturing. Prior to the start of the Empire, presumably pretty much all of the Mongols were Tengrist, or some closely associated Paganism, but as the Mongols spread throughout Eurasia, they drifted away from the old faith. Sometimes this happened when they conquered a new land and stayed there for a while, so they naturally went local, but it also happened to the Mongols hanging out back in Mongolia or the steppe. They would import craftsmen, slaves, and fine goods from abroad, and basically fall in love with some distant culture and eventually convert.
The spiritual fracturing wasn’t based on social class either; all strata of society adopted different religions. Genghis Khan’s elite military inner circle included Muslims, Christians, and Buddhists, as did his wives. One of the details in the book I found most surprising was just how big of a Christian influence there was in the Mongol Empire. Temujin’s main wife was a Christian, and was said to have a powerful hand in his policies. And after Temujin died, his successor was surrounded almost entirely by Christian advisers, much to the consternation of the other religious groups.
Most surprisingly, this religious fracturing didn’t lead to a break down of Mongol society, or at least not for hundreds of years. That’s the crazy thing – Genghis Khan’s religious freedom proclamation wasn’t just a law he slapped on the books, the Mongols bought into it.
Weatherford recounts an anecdote of a Mongol warrior talking to a bunch of captured Christian Russians. The Russians were shocked to hear that this warrior was also a Christian, and they asked how he could justify the butchering of his fellow Christians throughout Russia. The warrior replied with something like, “yes I am a Christian, but first I am a Mongol.”
That’s some pretty impressive secularism. Or maybe it’s some pretty impressive nationalism, of the sort that the rest of the world wouldn’t see until the 19th century. I’m no expert, but I can’t imagine anyone in Europe at the time identifying himself as first a Frenchman/Englishman/Tuscan/Spaniard/etc., and only second a Christian.

  1. Liberalism
In Scott Alexander’s Reactionary Philosophy in an Enormous, Planet-Sized Nutshell, he describes the perfect government as one created by aliens which levies a 20% tax on the planet, but basically lets people do whatever they want so they can keep being productive. Genghis Khan’s government was basically a medieval version of this.
Yes, yes, everyone always talks about the death and destruction wrought by the Mongol armies. But here’s how their conquests typically happened -
A Mongol army would ride up to some big walled city and demand the unconditional surrender of the inhabitants. If the city acquiesced, the Mongol army would ride in, demand that their horses be fed, tell the inhabitants to hand over 15% of the city’s wealth, and execute the 100 richest guys (not counting religious figures whom they rarely touched). Then the Mongol general would tell the local city administration that they are now part of the Mongol Empire. Their duty is to report to this small group of (probably Chinese or Korean) bureaucrats that the army is going to leave behind.
Then the army would leave, because unlike almost every other army on earth at the time, the entirely-cavalry-based Mongol armies didn’t need to be supplied externally. In fact, it was easier to keep armies supplied out in grassy fields where their horses could graze than in the cramped cities where the 5-horses-to-every-one-man would quickly burn through the grain supply.
Then these Mongol Empire bureaucrats would inform the city of their new tax obligation to the Empire, which was nearly always lower than that of their old tax obligation to their previous empire. Also, religious freedom is now a thing, so anyone caught beating Jews or Yazidi Muslims better stop. And also, the Mongols have their own legal code with a zero-tolerance policy, which mostly consists of stuff like “don’t steal,” “don’t rape,” and “don’t murder.” Even the Golden Family (the close relatives of the Great Khan) and the Great Khan himself were subject to Mongol laws. For instance, no member of the Golden Family could murder another family member without achieving a proper quorum. Now that’s rule of law.
Oh sure, as a Mongol citizen you can steal, rape, and murder to your heart’s content, but only of non-Mongol citizens. If you’re within the Empire then you’re one of us, and you are afforded the Great Khan’s protection. As long as you don’t disobey the Khan’s law, you’re free to do whatever the hell you want.
By medieval standards, this is a fantastic deal for a conquered people. There were no forced religious conversions, no looting, no byzantine legal systems designed to entrench the conquerors as a privileged class, and lower taxes. Sure, the old ruling class will probably be wiped out, but Temujin quickly figured out that the peasants don’t give a shit who rules them. One haughty lord sitting in a castle is no different than any other one. So as long as the Mongols were fair and honest in their rule, these conquered societies didn’t mind being decapitated and absorbed.
You want more benefits of Mongol rule? How about capitalism? According to Weatherford, the Mongols created the largest free trade zone on earth along the Silk Road. With the assistance of a robust and honest legal system, never before had goods moved so easily from China to Europe, with key stops in the Middle East, the steppes, and India. Suddenly rich people around Eurasia could enjoy Persian silk, Chinese pottery, Indian spices, European jewelry, and all the bounties of two continents.
But that’s just the economic goods, what about technological advances? Remember, the Mongols were master meritocrats. They picked up the best and brightest in every place they conquered and took them with the army and administration as they kept conquering. The Mongols spread Korean paper, Chinese gunpowder, Chinese paper money, Muslim caravan techniques, and countless more technologies throughout Eurasia.
Better yet, the Mongols didn’t just spread existing technology, they facilitated the creation of new tech by forcing different cultures and experts together. They put Arab, Indian, and Chinese doctors together in the same hospitals, where they could argue and critique and improve each other’s methods. They revolutionized gunpowder, bringing it from an unwieldy rocket up to use in the form of a “handgun.” (I’m sure there are more examples, but I can’t remember them).
Basically, joining the Mongol Empire was awesome. It meant lower taxes, more economic growth, more tolerance, better law enforcement, more technology, and better technology. All the city had to give up was its old corrupt leaders, a cut of its present wealth, and its independence.

The Costs
Of course, if this walled city didn’t surrender to the Mongol army it would be brutally conquered. The Mongols might starve out the inhabitants or blow the walls down with Chinese engineering, and then enjoy no-holds-bar pillaging, raping, and looting for as long as they damn well pleased.
Just as peaceful Mongol occupation was remarkably good for the time, Mongol conquest was remarkably bad. Weatherford explains that the Mongols had no sense of military honor; they simply had nothing holding them back. They believed that the only measure of military value was in the plunder gained by victory. The Christians had chivalry to somewhat blunt excesses, and Muhammad laid out military conduct doctrines in the Koran for Muslims to follow (ie. one should only loot a city for three days), but the Mongols had no restraints. They took what they wanted, and if a city was outside the bounds of the Empire, its history, culture, and inhabitants held no moral value to the Mongol armies.
As a result, the Mongol Empire killed something like 5-10% of the world’s population.
For instance, the population of Persia may have dropped from 2.5 million to 250,000. Chinese censuses show a fall from 120 million to 60 million, though natural famines and diseases probably played a big role. Poor little Hungary may have lost one million out of two million during its Mongol invasion.
Of course, the numbers are hard to calculate. The best historians can do is look at the pre-conquest census figures in places that had them, and then look at the Mongol census usually taken almost a century later, and compare the two. There were contemporary estimates, but the Mongols had a habit of dramatically overestimating their kill-counts for propaganda purposes. But typically, it’s easy to see what parts of the empire fell more or less peacefully than others.

How Genghis Khan Made the Modern World
Genghis Khan made the modern world by establishing a sort of, kind of, vaguely secular liberal government to unify much of Eurasia under a fair and prosperous system, which facilitated trade, economic growth, and technological growth for centuries. This growth primed the birth of modernity in the place that most benefited from the Mongol Empire… Europe.
Europe got many of the benefits of the Mongol Empire at limited costs. China, India, Persia, and the Islamic Caliphate all benefited from Mongol rule, but only after having their populations and cities annihilated by the Mongol armies first. Despite being ahead of Europe culturally, economically, and technologically before the Mongols came, these regions were never able to recover, even with the full benefits of Mongol rule.
Europe was attacked by the Mongols too, but only in Russia and the East. The Mongols easily could have pressed to the Atlantic, and basically smashed all of Eastern European knighthood in a single easy battle, but through sheer luck the planned invasion of the continent was cancelled because the Great Khan died and all of his sons had to run back to Mongolia to try to replace him.
So European population loses to the Mongols were comparatively small, but Europe was still on the receiving end of much of the glorious benefits of Mongol rule. They may not have been subject to Mongol law, but they purchased goods produced throughout the Mongol empire, and snapped up the technology spread. It was this prosperity that both financed and inspired explorers like Marco Polo and Christopher Columbus to leave Europe and seek Mongol land on the other side of the world.
IMO this is where Weatherford gets really shaky. He doesn’t devote enough time or detail to explaining the causal connection between Mongol Eurasia and the birth of modernity in Europe, but if you squint hard enough, you can kind of, sort of, vaguely see it.
