Offseason Review Series - Day 31: Kansas City Chiefs

Sorry this is a bit late, I was giving other posters time to post their reviews who were behind.

Too Long; Didn't Read

A TL;DR version can be found in the comments.

Overview

After the heart wrenching loss to the Titans in the Wild Card round at home, the Chiefs entered the offseason with many fans wanting changes. What transpired was an action packed offseason for the Chiefs in many ways fans did not expect. The most expected move of the offseason though was the trade of Alex Smith with Mahomes waiting in the wings. The haul was always the question when a prospective Alex Smith trade was brought up, and Veach delivered with a good haul in a 3rd round pick and Kendall Fuller, who didn’t even know he was traded for most of the night of the trade. Only a few weeks later, the most unexpected thing of the offseason transpired for the Chiefs fandom when Marcus Peters was traded to the Rams for a 2nd and 4th round pick. Many fans in KC, and even across the country, were stunned by the trade of a superstar corner, for seemingly peanuts (and frankly most people are still a bit confused). The Chiefs continued their roller coaster of an offseason by making big splashes in Free Agency with the signing of Sammy Watkins and Anthony Hitchens, as Brett Veach finally got his chance to make a major mark on the team. With a full defensive draft, a young hotshot QB, and a lot to prove, the Chiefs head into 2018 as a complete unknown.

Coaches

  • Head Coach, Andy Reid - Reid's back once again, with his shiny new toy Patrick Mahomes. Reid unleashed a very different offense on the NFL in 2017, that much resembled a college style offense with many read options, RPO's, and quick hit routes. In the Week 17 game with Mahomes at the helm however the offense changed once again to fit Mahomes strengths. The Chiefs spread out the defense with many 4-5 WR sets, and Mahomes threw most of the time from the shotgun. All this shows is that Reid is very in tune to his personal's strengths and weaknesses, and the same level of detail and care for the offensive scheme will show again in 2018. A small note here also, the blame for the playoff loss to the Titans should not fall on Reid's shoulders. A great writeup on the second half of the Titans game was posted on Arrowheadpride, and showed that the playcalling was mostly still solid in the second half of the game. Reid's offense might once again surprise the NFL in 2018 with Mahomes at the helm, so it is something to watch out for.
  • Offensive Coordinator, Eric Bieniemy - Bieniemy is in his first year as an OC for the Chiefs, and was previously the RB's coach for 5 years. He has a pretty impressive track record, with helping Jamaal Charles flourish in 2013 and coaching Spencer Ware and Kareem Hunt. It is of course Reid's offense first, but Bieniemy will have a fair bit of say in the offense and how it is run.
  • Defensive Coordinator, Bob Sutton - A very polarizing figure for fans in KC, Bob Sutton is back again at DC. Many demanded Sutton be fired after the Titans playoff loss in KC, but the Chiefs disagreed and publicly said they did not believe Sutton was the one that failed, they believe the Chiefs defensive roster was to blame. The Chiefs definitely tried to upgrade the defense for Sutton by snagging a host of players in Free Agency and in the Draft, so we will see if Sutton deserved to be kept or not. Sutton loves to mix and match on defense, running a ton of different packages to try and confuse the opponent. The main base package is Nickel for the Chiefs, with a roamer at safety and the front 6 lined up in various different ways. If Sutton can unlock the potential of the numerous young players on defense, the Chiefs could have something.
  • Special Teams Coordinator, David Toub - Toub is still atleast a Top 3 ST Coordinator in the league, and not much has changed that fact.

Notable Transactions & Reasonings:

  1. Alex Smith (QB), Trade for Kendall Fulle2018 3rd Round Pick - I’ll go more into Alex Smith later, but the jist of trading him was for cap reasons, how Alex plays as a QB, and a small part age. The writing was on the wall after the Chiefs drafted Mahomes this would happen and the Chiefs got a good haul for the QB. Alex Smith’s career in KC was a great one, and I’m sure all Chiefs fans enjoyed his time here.
  2. Kendall Fuller (CB), Trade for Alex Smith - At the time, the reason the Chiefs got Fuller was to bolster a secondary spot at CB2 that was awful for the Chiefs in 2017. Later we would find out it was to replace Peters.
  3. Marcus Peters (CB), Trade for 2018 4th Round/2019 2nd Round Pick - We still don’t really know why the Chiefs traded Marcus Peters. Was it the throwing the flag/walking off the field outburst? Was it kneeling? Was there more not reported? We don’t have answers, and the return suggests something was amiss. If it had to happen, it had to happen.
  4. Sammy Watkins (WR), FA Signing for 3 years/48 million - What’s a good way to help your young QB adjust to the NFL? Give him the best set of 4 weapons in the league. Sammy Watkins provides the Chiefs offense the chess pieces that no other team has and gives their redshirt sophmore QB the best chance to succeed in his flagship year. Brett Veach said Sammy Watkins was his #1 Free Agent for the 2018 FA Period, and you could tell by the contract he gave Watkins. Veach said he loved Watkins tape, and Watkins was put in a pretty hard situation in LA to rack up stats due to his role, when he arrived, and the lack of chemistry between him and Goff. The three year contract is low risk however, as the Chiefs can get out of the contract in 2 years if need be.
  5. Anthony Hitchens (ILB), FA Signing for 5 years/45 million - With DJ retiring and the only solid performing ILB on the Chiefs roster being Reggie Ragland, Veach went out and got the guy at ILB he wanted. Hitchens is a piece of the defensive rebuild that Brett Veach set his mind on for the 2018 offseason. One fun note is that Brett Veach tried to trade for Anthony Hitchens during the 2017 preseason but the asking price was too high, so he waited till he was a FA to sign him. Hitchens contract is large and ensures he’s with the Chiefs for a while, but if he continues to improve on what he’s shown in Dallas he could be a good piece in the young Chiefs defense.
  6. David Amerson (CB), FA Signing for 1 yea2.25 million - Amerson was signed to a prove it deal with the Chiefs, but with expectations being higher than that. The 26 year old CB struggled mightily last year, but was solid for 2 years before that. The Chiefs are banking on that solid Amerson to emerge once again as his big frame and skill at press man fit in perfectly in Bob Sutton's defense.
  7. Xavier Williams (DT), FA Signing for 2 years/5 million - Another piece in the defensive rebuild is the run stuffing specilist from the Cardinals. The Chiefs were able to snatch the RFA from the Cards in order to fill the open hole at DT, and, in theory, upgrade their run stuffing on the inside.
  8. Tamba Hali (OLB), Released - Partially play, partially cap savings, it was time for the Chiefs to move on from Hali. Tamba’s knees just aren’t cut out for football anymore, and the Chiefs legend might come back for coaching every now and then.
  9. Derrick Johnson (ILB), Released - The Chiefs decided to go younger at ILB, and move on from the long time Chief Derrick Johnson. This was strictly a cap move, for DJ was still doing well at ILB in 2017. DJ was tied for the longest tenured Chief with Dustin Colquitt, and one of the most beloved Chiefs of the 2000s, so his absence will hurt many Chiefs fans (especially now that he signed with Oakland, eww).
  10. Ron Parker (S), Released - Parker fell off a cliff in 2017, and his play wasn’t worth the cap hit. Parker was good for the Chiefs for a few years before.
  11. Bennie Logan (DT), Let go in Free Agency - Logan did fine in 2017, but his run stuffing was not up to the expectations some had for him. The Chiefs decided to let Logan go after his one year with the Chiefs because of this.
  12. Albert Wilson (WR), Let go in Free Agency - Albert Wilson, the solid if still slightly unproven slot WR for the Chiefs, went and signed with Miami in the offseason. The Chiefs have very solid depth at WR though so this loss will probably not impact the team in any meaningful way.
  13. Zac Fulton (G) - Let go in Free Agency - Zac Fulton was probably the free agency loss that hurt the most for the Chiefs. While the Chiefs Oline is average, the depth is sparse with Fulton now gone. Fulton could play at Guard or Center and fill in admirably, but his price tag was to high for the Chiefs.

Draft Picks & Reasonings

Player Round Pick Position Explanation
Breeland Speaks 2 46 OLB The first pick of the 2018 draft for the Chiefs was in the second round because of the Mahomes trade, and it turned out to be Breeland Speaks. Speaks is a versatile body on the line, who will be played standing up, with his hand in the dirt, and a few times inside. Speaks is a very Bob Sutton pick, for Sutton likes to move around his players in the Front 7.
Derrick Nnadi 3 75 DT The Dline picks continued with Nnadi, who projects to be a DT or 3 tech DE. Nnadi is a quality run stuffer who will be paired with Xavier Williams to try and give the Chiefs a much needed presence at NT in their 3-4 defense.
Dorian O'Daniel 3 100 S/LB DOD has the stature of the tweener LB/S hybrid role, and that is the role the Chiefs drafted him to play. With how much Nickel and Dime the Chiefs run, DOD has a chance early and often to contribute in the Chiefs secondary.
Armani Watts 4 124 FS Watts, the ball hawk from Texas A&M, was drafted to fill the same role on the Chiefs. With very little top end talent at FS, Watts has a serious chance to start at FS if he performs well in Training Camp and the Pre season.
Tremon Smith 6 196 CB With CB seemingly the weakest position group for the Chiefs heading into the draft, they waited to the 6th round to actually pick a CB. Tremon Smith is a small school guy who looked good on any tape you could get of him. Being from the small Central Arkansas school worked against him, but his natural ability in press was what intrigued the Chiefs to select him.
Kalil McKenzie 6 198 G In one of the funniest picks of the draft, the Chiefs took the son of GM Reggie McKenzie of the Oakland Raiders in the 6th round. While he was a DT in college, the Chiefs drafted him as a Guard.

Overall Impressions:

The Chiefs went into the 2018 draft with obvious needs all over the defense, so it was not surprising to see a mostly defensive draft from the Chiefs. The small surprise that formed as the draft went on was the lack of draft picks at Corner Back, because the only CB perceived as good on the Chiefs roster was Kendall Fuller. Instead the Chiefs chose to build up the Front 7 with their first few picks in Breeland Speaks and Derrick Nnadi. These two picks continued the defensive philosophy for the 2018 offseason for Brett Veach, which was building up the Front 7; especially the Run Defense. The mid-late round picks on defense built out the secondary with good nickel/dime package players along with excellent special teamers.
The draft followed the common theme the Chiefs put out there that they blame the poor defensive showing in 2018 on the players not Bob Sutton's coaching and scheme.
Overall, the draft deserves a grade around C+.

Projected Depth Chart & Thoughts on each player

I won't go over every player, because that is a bit ridiculous, but I'll go over all the starters and a few of the backups of note.

Offense -

QB - Patrick Mahomes: I have already written about Mahomes a lot, so I will be pretty brief here. Mahomes will have his moments looking like a rookie this year, but will also have flashes of brilliance. It's hard to really know how the second year QB will look this year, and his play will be the most important factor for the Chiefs year. A few things Mahomes excelled at last year in limited play time was working the intermediate part of the field (11-19 yards) and keeping his eyes downfield under pressure. If he can limit turnovers some, the Chiefs offense should be explosive at his command.
RB - Kareem Hunt: Kareem Hunt, the rookie phenom who led the NFL in rushing yards, is back once again in 2018. After dominating the NFL in the first half of the season last year, Hunt did enter a lull period towards the end of the year. During Hunt's, and the Chiefs offense as a whole, lull last year Reid had changed how the run blocking was executed and Reid later lamented that he shouldn't have done that and says it impacted Hunt majorly. When Reid reverted how the run plays were ran Hunt had a small resurgence at the end of the year with some solid games to close out the year. The thing to note for Hunt is his natural talent at Running Back, which manifested in him forcing the most missed tackles of any RB last year. He is able to do this because of his great balence, and shifty feet which let him bounce off defenders at good angles, or just flat out avoid them. Also a fun note is his only fumble last year was his first play of the year against the Patriots.
RB2 - Spencer Ware: The Chiefs backfield is intriguing, mainly due to Spencer Ware sitting at RB2. Ware had a really good 2016 year and rushed for 921 yards in 14 games with 4.3 YPC. Ware had his 2017 cut short in the preseason with a torn PCL, and has come back on a mission. So far in Training Camp word is he looks healthy and nimble, and Ware will function as a fantastic RB2 to Hunt if he truly is healthy.
WR1 - Tyreek Hill: Tyreek Hill was the best deep threat in the league last year, the stats clearly show that. Hill's emergence in 2017 really was down to Hill working on himself and becoming a better, pure Wide Receiver, which included route running and working on his hands. Hill has continued to work on becoming a better refined WR, and paired with the big armed QB in Mahomes, it's hard to not see Hill being the premiere deep threat in the NFL again.
WR2 - Sammy Watkins: Sammy Watkins is an interesting player, because of expectations out of college and how his career has gone. Injuries nagged Watkins his first two years, but for the most part Watkins had really good seasons considering who his Quarterbacks were and how low volume the Bills passing offense was. As far as his year with the Rams, here is a quick analysis on it:
Stats are sometimes a small part of the whole story, with Watkins there are many things to consider about his year with the Rams:
  1. He was traded to the Rams August 22nd last year, halfway through the preseason. He had little time to learn the playbook and gel with Goff.
  2. Because of #1, Watkins role in the Rams offense was the 3rd WR and decoy. He was there to draw coverage and get Woods/Kupp open. Even though he was the decoy, he was still tops in the NFL on post routes and also was the best WR against off man coverage.
  3. Goff was particularly poor in targeting Watkins deep last year, only 6/20 deep passes to Watkins last year where accurate. Not completed, accurate.
Watkins has gone on record and said the Rams asked him to be 1 type of WR, a Post/Go/Slant WR who plays the decoy. With the Chiefs so far Watkins has said they have asked him to do anything and everything, and Watkins has looked very good in camp and him and Mahomes have connected on numerous TDs. Time will tell with Watkins and whether he will stay healthy and produce, but he is in a great position to do so.
WR3&4 - Demarcus Robinson/Chris Conley: Robinson and Conley will be fighting for the WR3 and WR4 spots in Training Camp and in Preseason. Conley has been the WR3 for the Chiefs for a few years, but an Achilles tear last year and the emergence of Robinson late in the year have these two battling it out. Both have the physical tools to play outside WR, both are good run blockers, so this will be down to which player shows the most promise.
TE - Travis Kelce: The consensus TE2 in the league is back once again after a great 2017. There is not much to say about Kelce that isn't already known, and Kelce has been Mahomes security blanket so far in Training Camp. Kelce's importance to the Chiefs really showed in the Titans playoff game where once he went down to injury, the Chiefs scored no points for the rest of the game.
LT - Eric Fisher: Eric Fisher, while a disappointing 1st overall pick, has turned into an average LT. He is all around fine at both run blocking and pass blocking, and has been very durable over the years. Having a LT that isn't a liability is a good thing to have, and the Chiefs have that with Fisher.
LG - Cameron Erving: Well...that isn't ideal. Erving was traded to the Chiefs last year for a 5th round pick and performed, not too great but not awfully. So far the story out of Training Camp is that Erving is doing well and he's beating out the other players at LG so we will see how the Erving experiment goes.
C - Mitch Morse: Morse is back and as healthy as ever. After his stellar rookie year where he was playing like a top 10 Center Morse had an injury plagued 2017 and his fall off in play reflected that. Back now, and healthy, the Chiefs are hoping Morse regains his rookie year form and continues his role as the brains of the Oline.
RG - Laurent Duvernay-Tardif M.D.: LDT got his MD in the offseason, and even though the NFL won't let him put MD on his uniform, I'm sure we will be reminded he got his MD constantly this year. LDT has been a staple at RG for the Chiefs for a few years now, and is a part of the great ride side of the Oline for the Chiefs. LDT is balenced in his blocking, being both good at pass and run blocking.
RT - Mitchell Schwartz: Second team All Pro RT Mitchell Schwartz rounds out the Oline. Schwartz is the anchor for the Oline, never misses games, and is an especially great pass blocker. The Chiefs will need Schwartz and co to excel at pass blocking again in 2018 in a division with elite pass rushers on every team.

Defense -

RE - Chris Jones: One of the most underrated players in the NFL, Chris Jones has been a force on the Dline for the Chiefs since they drafted him in 2016. PFF had him as a Top 5 interior pass rusher for 2017 and was also on their Top 25 players under 25 as well. Jones will be a major factor for the Chiefs defense in 2018, and will have to once again be a force if the defense wants to improve on their disappoint year last year.
NT - Xavier Williams/Derreck Nnadi: Williams and Nnadi will be most likely sharing snaps at NT, and are poised to be the best NT presence the Chiefs have had since pre-back surgery Dontari Poe. Actual body occupying Nose Tackles are something the Chiefs defense has desperately needed for a few years now, and having two seemingly solid ones should help them stay fresh, and the Chiefs defense on point in run defense.
LE - Allen Bailey: The always dependable Allen Bailey is back again in 2018, and while he isn't quite the force he was a few years ago, he's a solid piece on the Dline that makes the great play every now and then.
ROLB - Dee Ford/Breeland Speaks: I'll group Ford and Speaks together, because they will be rotated out for each other fairly regularly. The Chiefs are adopting the Eagles philosophy about too many pass rushers isn't possible by having drafted two OLB prospects the last two years high in the draft. Speaks is the latest one, and he has been practicing all the aspects of playing a standup role because he played with his hand in the dirt in college. Ford is coming back after having a back injury in 2017 and he says he is healthy, and a healthy Ford is a great combo with Justin Houston on the other side.
ILB - Anthony Hitchens/Reggie Ragland: The new look linebackers for the Chiefs on the inside are going into their first year as a duo, and expectations for them are pretty high. Ragland played very well at the end of 2017 including a statement game against his former team the Buffalo Bills. Ragland is projected to be the main run stuffing specialist at ILB. Anthony Hitchens was signed by the Chiefs in Free Agency for 5 years/45 million and he also excels at stuffing the run. So far in Training Camp Hitchens has also been the player that relays the defensive playcalls in. These two will hopefully be able to bolster the awful run defenses of years past that the Chiefs have had.
LOLB - Justin Houston/Tanoh Kpassagnon: Houston had lower sack numbers in 2017, but his pressure rate was still just as good as prime Justin Houston. While it is a Training Camp meme, Houston did say he feels fully healthy in 2018 and a fully healthy Justin Houston is a very good player. Tanoh Kpassagnon is Houston's backup and is the 2nd year player that is a physical freak. Standing at 6'7" 290 lbs Tanoh shouldn't move like he does, but his problem as a rookie was that the technical parts of his game were pretty lacking. With one year of refinement it seems like Tanoh is poised to take the next step, so he is a player to watch in the pass rushing rotation.
CB - Lot's of interesting stories at CB, so I'll group them all together:
  1. Kendall Fuller - Coming over from Washington in the Alex Smith trade, Fuller eases the blow of losing Marcus Peters. Fuller was the #1 slot corner in the league last year and is an important piece going into 2018 for the Chiefs, who had a pitiful secondary in 2017. Fuller will be moved around a bit on defense, playing in the slot as well as on the outside.
  2. Steven Nelson - Nelson was the only serviceable CB on the roster last year not named Marcus Peters, the story out of camp is that he is back with a big chip on his shoulder to perform at a high level. Nelson has recorded numerous INTs in Training Camp so far, so we will have to see if his Training Camp will translate to on the field production this year.
  3. David Amerson - Amerson has a particularly awful 2017 for the Raiders, but the Chiefs are banking on 2015/2016 Amerson to show up. Amerson commented that he is much more comfortable in press man coverages, which is exclusively what the Chiefs run. Doing really well so far in camp, Amerson has a lot to prove and he'll have a lot of play time to prove it.
FS - Leon McQuay/Armani Watts/Eric Murray: Not a lot of confidence in this group of very young players. Watts probably has the most potential, but for now this group is unrealized and unfounded. FS is an important role in the Bob Sutton defense so one will need to step it up this year, or the Chiefs might experience some hiccups on defense regularly.
SS - Eric Berry/Daniel Sorenson/Dorian O'Daniel: Berry is back, and hopefully better than ever. He is moving well and looks sharp in Training Camp but that is not the real thing so it's a bit wait and see. Daniel Sorenson injured his knee in Training Camp so he will be out of commission for multiple weeks, which gives Dorian O'Daniel his time to shine as the hybrid LB/SS the Chiefs drafted him to be.
Kicker - Harrison Butker: Buttkicker is back, and fresh off his amazing 36/40 rookie year kicking.
Punter - Dustin Colquitt: Now the longest tenured Chief because of DJ leaving, Dustin "MVP" Colquitt is still a top punter in the league at pinning offenses inside the 20.

Schedule by Game:

Week 1 - Kansas City Chiefs @ Los Angeles Chargers (L 24-21) - Chiefs open with a very important game in LA against the Chargers. Not really the ideal start to the 2018 with Mahomes still really fresh and on the road, and it's tough to really envision how it will go. The Chargers are also healthy usually around this time of year, so I think it'll be a close loss.
Week 2 - Kansas City Chiefs @ Pittsburgh Steelers (W 28-21) - The Chiefs have struggled mightily against the Steelers in recent years, but that was with Alex Smith. In a Mahomes statement game he beats the demons known as the Steelers and shows he's here to stay in the NFL.
Week 3 - San Fransisco 49ers @ Kansas City Chiefs (L 31-24) - There are always games you think on paper that you win that you lose, and here is one for the Chiefs. I am a big fan of Jimmy G, so I could definitely see a world where he has a good game against our realitively unproven secondary.
Week 4 - Kansas City Chiefs @ Denver Broncos (W 21-20) - Mahomes get's another win by beating the Broncos in Denver. The Chiefs record against division opponents the last few years is the best of any team playing their division, and that's mainly due to Andy Reid. Because of the coaching difference, the Chiefs sneak out a win in Denver.
Week 5 - Jacksonville Jaguars @ Kansas City Chiefs (L 24-17) - This is just too difficult a matchup for a redshirt sophmore QB, as the Jags secondary and pass rush is terrifying. Even at home, the Chiefs lose this one.
Week 6 - Kansas City Chiefs @ New England Patriots (L 31-20) - Going into New England, as a redshirt sophmore QB, against Tom Brady is a gargantuan task. It's hard to predict the Chiefs winning this one, but if Mahomes wants a true statement game in 2018, then this would be the game.
Week 7 - Cincinnati Bengals @ Kansas City Chiefs (W 28-17) - A more palatable game than the last two, the Chiefs defense is actually the unit that wins the day here. With the Bengals boasting a weak Oline, the Chiefs new look front 7 just seems like too much on paper for the Bengals Oline.
Week 8 - Denver Broncos @ Kansas City Chiefs (W 34-24) - Denver now comes to Arrowhead and the pumped up crowd gives the Chiefs the edge to beat out the Broncos and sweep them for the year.
Week 9 - Kansas City Chiefs @ Cleveland Browns (W 28-21) - I realize every team will have themselves beating the Browns, but it's hard to really buy into a team that was 1-31 the past two years. The moves the Browns have made with ex-GM John Dorsey at the helm have the Browns on their way to becoming a good team, but for now it's not enough to beat the Chiefs.
Week 10 - Arizona Cardinals @ Kansas City Chiefs (L 21-17) - The Cardinals are sneaky good, and especially their defense. I think the teams the Chiefs will struggle against the most this year are those that can shut down a few Chiefs weapons and rush the passer very well, which the Cards fit the bill.
Week 11 - Kansas City Chiefs @ Los Angeles Rams (L 34-31) - The Chiefs travel to Mexico City to play the Rams, and in a shoutout for the country to the south the Chiefs lose a close one to the Rams. The positive for this game is that Peters gets burned a few times by Tyreek Hill and doesn't get his INT he said he would get against Mahomes.
Week 12 - BYE - Late week bye weeks are pretty solid, as they let vets that are injured or sore take a week off late in the year.
Week 13 - Kansas City Chiefs @ Soon to be Las Vegas Raiders (L 24-21) - Hopefully not in the soul crushing fashion like the 2017 loss to Oakland, the Chiefs lose a close one to the Raiders. At some point Derek Carr has to have a good game against the Chiefs right?
Week 14 - Baltimore Ravens @ Kansas City Chiefs (L 21-13) - I'm high on the Ravens this year, and I forsee Mahomes struggling against the veteran Ravens defense. Chiefs have their worst offensive performance of the year against the Ravens in a home loss.
Week 15 - Los Angeles Chargers @ Kansas City Chiefs (W 24-23) - Chiefs pay back the Chargers with a Week 15 win. Now that Mahomes has almost played a full season he is able to handle the Chargers defense better and scrape a close win at home.
Week 16 - Kansas City Chiefs @ Seattle Seahawks (W 31-24) - The Chiefs go to Seattle and take one from Russell Wilson. It's hard not to look at the Seahawks and see a weaker team than the one in 2017, especially so if ET3 leaves them via a trade before the season starts.
Week 17 - Oakland Raiders @ Kansas City Chiefs (W 34-21) - To end the year on a high note, the Chiefs are able to handily beat the Raiders at home and avenge their loss from earlier in the year. Mahomes puts up 4 TDs in the win, and shows he is truly an NFL caliber QB.
Final Record 8-8.

Overall Schedule Thoughts:

Chiefs, on paper, have a pretty tough schedule. The worst part of the schedule is the first 6 games, and if the Chiefs can emerge from that stretch of games with 2 wins there is a world in which they could be fighting for a Wild Card spot in December depending on how Mahomes plays. All in all, like it's been said many times, the season depends on Mahomes. With the Chargers and Broncos bolstering good defenses, and with many good secondaries on the docket for 2018, Mahomes has a tough road ahead for himself. With the offensive weapons on offense and Andy Reid in the background however, Mahomes has a lot going for him as well. In fact, it isn't so bold to say that the Chiefs defense is actually the lynchpin for the Chiefs year this year. Coming off a horrid year in 2017, the Chiefs defense is back and much younger, but with youth brings inexperience. If Bob Sutton can unlock the potential of the young defensive players on the Chiefs and lead the defense to an average year, the Chiefs could very well have a year that surprises a lot of people.

Final Thoughts

2018 is a wild time for Chiefs fans and is possible the most anticipated year for the Chiefs since Joe Montana came to KC. Expectations should be in check for a redshirt sophmore QB, but it's hard not to be excited with the dynamic weapons the Chiefs have to pair with a gunslinging QB. The Chiefs year might be tied mainly to how the defense does after a very disappointing showing in 2017, for when you have a young and inexperienced QB, the best way to help him out is to make sure he doesn't have to feel like he is a one man show (like Mahomes at TTU). The Chiefs year, no matter what, will atleast resemble a wild roller coaster of emotions for sure.

The MAC'S Back Room Action on last night's College Basketball game, Northwestern Wildcats +9.5 was a exactly what it we called it, BACK ROOM ACTION, a close cover that one could almost call a "FIX" as the Minnesota Golden Gophers won this game by exactly 9 as a -9.5 favorite, letting the Wildcats cover by the hook! Roland's been playing and fading these teams for years, knowing when to lay or take points with teams like the Bears, Gaels, Bulldogs, and Huskies has aggrandized THE MAC's reputation for his college hoops Back Room Info Plays.
