Leverage cost / opportunity cost / miscellaneous

For those out there that have savings or investments in an ISA, but still have a mortgage, you are effectively paying your mortgage rate to get leverage on stocks and shares etc.
How does this stack up vs using a spread betting provider like Trading 212, or Spreadex? You can then pay down your mortgage more, and invest using leverage / on margin. Has anyone done a quantitative analysis on the benefits of each method?
Separately, how do people factor in to FIRE the need to support others? For example my parents are poor, so I help them financially. If I have kids, I want to be able to provide for them if they have trouble and need round the clock care etc. How much extra do people save to cope with nursing homes etc?

Spreads in the general election

I am looking to dig through some information on spreads for the general election. Hoping that someone here can point me to some sites or resources where that is being discussed.
Particularly, I'd like to gauge the likelihood of it being +/- 60. Spreadex is currently showing an estimated margin of 110 (unless my ignorance is causing me to misunderstand those numbers). Does this mean that would be a surprise if the margin of victory was below 60?

European stocks plunge as Wall Street’s tech selloff and U.S.-China tensions spook investors

European stocks fell sharply on Friday, as technology stocks tumbled and investors were no longer able to shrug off escalating tensions between the U.S. and China.
The pan-European Stoxx 600 SXXP, -1.70% slipped 1.7%, with tech stocks falling 3.8%. The German DAX DAX, -2.02% fell 2% and the French CAC PX1, -1.53% was 1.5% lower.
Asian markets tumbled overnight as Beijing retaliated against the U.S. after the Trump administration ordered the closure of the Chinese consulate in Houston. China ordered the U.S. to close its own consulate in Chengdu, as the spat between the world’s two largest economies intensified.
Hong Kong’s Hang Seng HSI, -2.20% index fell 2.6%, while China’s Shanghai Composite SHCOMP, -3.86% slumped 3.9%. The negative sentiment, compounded by U.S. tech stocks falling late on Thursday, spilled over into the European open.
“The fear is that this might only be the start of a re-escalation in tensions between the two superpowers,” Spreadex analyst Connor Campbell said, as President Donald Trump seeks to “distract” from the domestic situation in America ahead of the Presidential election.
After Intel warned production problems could delay the next generation of its nanometer chips by at least six months, European microchip companies Infineon Technologies IFX, -3.94% and ASML ASML, -4.30% slumped in early trading., along with the broader European tech sector.
Thursday’s late slump lower on Wall Street was led by Apple and Microsoft, accounting for more than half of the Dow’s DJIA, -0.68% losses, as weak employment data and concerns over another Congressional financial-aid package appeared to spark a selloff in large-cap stocks. Tesla TSLA, -6.34%, Amazon.com AMZN, +0.74%, Netflix NFLX, +0.60% and Google parent Alphabet GOOGL, -0.56% all fell.
There was some good news in Europe, but it was largely ignored by investors, given the broader mood early on Friday.
French business activity beat expectations in July, rebounding more than expected after lockdown measures were lifted, according to the closely-followed purchasing managers index. The German manufacturing sector also avoided a contraction for the first time in 19 months. In further positive signs, U.K. retail sales surged 13.9% in June, beating consensus estimates of a 8.3% rise, with sales now higher than they were precrisis.

STOCKS N’ MARKETS

London stocks finished above the waterline on Monday, following the release of the latest UK manufacturing data, as investors kept an eye on ongoing tensions between the US and China after US President Trump's news conference last week. The FTSE 100 ended the session up 1.48% at 6,166.42, and the FTSE 250 was 1.38% firmer at 17,277.53.
Sterling was stronger against both of its major trading pairs, last gaining 1.01% on the dollar to $1.2468, and advancing 0.83% against the euro to €1.1213. "In that anxiety-inducing address, the president announced the US would be revoking Hong Kong's preferential treatment status for trade and travel, no longer viewing the region as 'autonomous' from China," said Spreadex analyst Connor Campbell. "Given what markets were expecting - something that would more explicitly damage the US-China trade deal - this news was actually a relative relief. However, that relief might prove to be short-lived." Stocks had pared some gains earlier following a report that Chinese officials had told agriculture companies to halt imports of some US farm goods.
Standard Chartered surged 8.66% after an upgrade to 'buy' at Jefferies, while education publisher Pearson was boosted 7.88% by an upgrade to 'buy' at Goldman Sachs. Aerospace and defence giant Rolls-Royce rallied 5.49%, having suffered heavy losses last week following a stake sale by AKO Capital and a downgrade of its credit rating by Standard & Poor's. British Airways and Iberia parent IAG added 5.91% and cruise operator Carnival advanced 7.28%, both on the prospect of travel restrictions being lifted.

Why doesn't everyone...

So, probably a newbie question, however I've opened an account at SpreadEx to try this spreadbetting out. Nothing serious. I see oil is down in the dumps, so my question is:
May spot is at low 18s. June futures is at 25.
Why would you not just go long on the spot and short on the June contract - they will eventually come to meet each other and that's a big gap to profit from.
Is it to do with the expiry. I see the June spot is priced at 25 too. Does that mean the May spot will expire and any positions would roll to the June spot at 25. Doesn't make sense, but why have expiries on spot prices?
Thanks!

Stocks Rise Just b/c the President and Advisors Says ". . . .its a 'certainty' the U.S. will have a 'strong economy through 2020 and beyond with a bull market,'"

U.S. President Donald Trump played down recession fears on Sunday in comments to reporters, while his top economic adviser Larry Kudlow echoed those comments in appearances on Sunday talk shows.
Kudlow predicted a strong second-half performance for the U.S. economy and told Fox News Sunday that the administration was “looking at” a 10% tax cut for middle-income earners that was hinted at by Trump ahead of 2018 midterm elections.
Meanwhile, White House trade adviser Peter Navarro said it was a “certainty” the U.S. will have a “strong economy through 2020 and beyond with a bull market,” thanks to stimulus from major economies and “the largest trade deal ever in history.” He also insisted the “Fed will be lowering rates” as part of that global stimulus push.
“Investors appeared to take to heart Trump’s claim that the US is ‘doing tremendously well’, alongside his reassurances that Washington and China are continuing to talk trade-wise,” wrote Connor Cambell, market analyst with Spreadex in a Monday note.
This is ridiculous, which president has ever admitted the economy was in trouble more than halfway through his first term unless it was absolutely necessary politically? The people buying on this type of speculation are making a mistake. Trump is just blowing rainbows out his butt (no disrespect intended).

What Happened To The US Market Last Week (Summary)

Equities were helped in part by the latest economic data. Initial jobless claims fell by 4,000 in the latest week, the second-lowest reading of the economic recovery, which began eight years ago. Continuing claims were at their lowest level since 1988.
Separately, the Philadelphia Fed manufacturing index jumped to a reading of 38.8 in May from 22 in April. While investors have been holding firm in light of the drama out of Washington, Wednesday’s revelations caused the market to question whether controversies surrounding the White House would derail President Donald Trump’s economic agenda, said Karyn Cavanaugh, senior market strategist at Voya Financial, in an interview. “Investors wanted a pullback and they got one,” Cavanaugh said. “We’re still looking forward to pro-growth policies and no matter who is in the White House, we’re still looking for pro-growth policies.”
“Even though optimism for Trump’s pro-growth agenda has mostly unwound, if this political crisis deepens and elevated volatility persists, equities could see further weakness in the short-term driven by deleveraging across fundamental and systematic strategies,” J.P. Morgan wrote in a note to clients, adding that “fundamentals remain supportive.” Wednesday’s decline came after the New York Times reported that Trump had asked former FBI Director James Comey to drop an investigation into possible ties between his inner circle and the Russians. Among other things, the controversy was seen as making the passage of Trump’s economic agenda — something analysts say is necessary to justify market valuations — less likely.
Wall Street could continue to be driven by the news coming out of Washington. Earlier on Thursday, Reuters reported that former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn and others on Trump’s campaign team exchanged at least 18 undisclosed phone calls or emails with Russian contacts during the 2016 presidential race. “The scandal is so dominant at the moment that I guess it doesn’t take a lot to spook investors,” said Connor Campbell, financial analyst at Spreadex, in emailed comments.
Global stocks fell last friday in the wake of the U.S. selloff. TheNikkei 225 index NIK, -0.07% slid 1.3% alongside a sharp rise in the Japanese yen, which has surged as investors seek out perceived haven assets. European stocks finished lower as the Stoxx Europe 600 index SXXP, -0.50%finished down 0.5%, adding to a 1.2% decline Wednesday that marked its biggest one-day percentage loss since Sept. 26. Gold prices GCM7, -0.30% settled down 0.5% at $1,252.80, while oil pricesCLM7, +0.20% traded higher, with West Texas Intermediate crude settling up 0.6% at $49.35 a barrel.

Euro plunges as Marine Le Pen given big boost ahead of French elections

This is an automatic summary, original reduced by 29%.
A poll on Friday had showed that if Mr Juppe had become the new centre-right candidate, he would likely win the election's first round in April, with Emmanuel Macron coming second - knocking anti-Brussels Ms Le Pen out of the race.
Markets have been on edge ahead of the French elections amid the rising popularity of Front National leader Ms Le Pen.
The far-right candidate has promised to put a Frexit vote to the public should she win the election.
If France votes out of the euro, markets fear it could spell the end of the project.
"Connor Campbell, market analyst at Spreadex.com, said:"Alain Juppe's decision not to replace the scandal-laden Francois Fillon as the conservative party's presidential candidate.
"That realistically leaves only Emmanuel Macron to battle with Marine Le Pen, and though the former currently has a significant chance of winning the presidency - and a slim chance of beating out the Front National candidate in the first round of voting - the markets won't welcome any more uncertainty."
