AITA for telling a friend’s friend that he couldn’t keep the “jackpot” that he hit on my antique slot machine? (About $700)

I had a party at my house last night. I have an antique slot machine from the 1940s that is in absolutely spotless and working condition in my living room. My step grandma was a show girl she she got it while dating a count room guy prior to meeting my grandpa.
Over the years people have played it and maybe won a few quarters here and there. Maybe a max of $50 at a time. As far as I know the jackpot was never hit on it so however it works there was probably about $700 in the jackpot reserve that had built up over the years. I’d never bothered to have it cleaned out since it just seemed like a fun novelty.
Well a friend’s friend hit the jackpot last night. I was fucking floored when he legit thought he could keep my ~$700. His case was hed been playing with his own money and I would have kept his quarters. My argument was I’d be happy to give him his quarters back if he’d asked but I’m not a casino and while I’m not destitute, I can’t afford to give someone $700. Argument caused the party to wind down and one of my best guy friends basically told the guy he’d be in real shit if he tried to leave with the money but the guy left threatening to come back with the cops and sue me in small claims court. I have no idea if that was realistic but no cops came back.
So was I the asshole for nor letting him keep the money?
Edit: sorry guys I can't answer such witticisms as "why are you so shity?" because I've been banned.
Edit2: wow since I’m a “baby gangster” who has been running an “illegal gaming operation” (both things that have been said) I might as well just go whole hog and start running guns and pimping underage Andean alpacas to people who would pay for the privilege. I’m really that bad? I just thought I had a cool thing my step grandma got by banging a dude from the count room.
Edit3: gotta address this one directly:
If this was really last night, give it a week or a month and see how many friends, especially mutual friends, are no longer talking to you. Forget our votes, listen to those. Also forget small claims, you need to worry more about hearing from your state's gambling commission.
If the moderators allow me to update, I will ABSOLUTELY update and tell you how many friends I’ve lost. Almost everyone (including the friend that brought the “winner” thought he was being a total asshole for the way he was down on his hands and knees scooping up quarters off the floor to put in his pockets. And he was lying about much he put into the machine too (he said $75–who the fuck walks around, nuch less even get $75 in quarters—when going to a party at a strangers house). In addition, I will gladly, gladly call our state gaming commission (AZ) and ask what trouble I might be in. I will also update on that when I can. People CAN’T be this dramatic in real life...I’m a ducking instagram influencer for my job, the phoniest, most vapid, saddest job a person can have right now and I’m still blown away by some of these comments. Call me YTA all you like, but don’t be stupid and claim to have knowledge you don’t in the process.
Edit4: well I was banned for joking around, other people have bad posts calling me a cunt up for over an hour. Makes INFO hard but I’ll try to explain my thinking on the money in the machine and why I can’t “afford” to give it to him.
Say you have a change jar, has $100 in it. Your good friend asks to borrow $25, for parking, you'd say yes right? Another friend says wow, that’s cool I have $1.25 in my pocket, can I donate to your change jar? You’d say yes. Now let’s say a guy you’ve never met says “hey I just put .80 into your change jar, now I’m taking the whole thing.” You would say no. It’s how I’ve always seen the slot machine as huge change jar for all my close friends to use. I’ve given people quarters to play, I’ve taken a quarter here and there from people who wanted to see it work. I’ve taken in maybe $100 over five years. Maybe. That’s a nickel a day. that’s not a freaking illegal gambling operation.
Edit5: a good question:
INFO Did he explicitly ask if he was allowed to play it, and keep what he wins? If no then he played it without permission, you aren't running a casino.
No he did not, the first time I ever saw or spoke to him was when he was on his hands and knees picking quarters up off the floor slamming them his pockets. I don't mind if people play it, I even give people quarters to play it (since no one has change anymore) but he did not ask.
Edit6: another good question
Also, need more info. You stated that other guests have won small jackpots in the past (max $50). Did you let them keep it? If so, why are you making a double-standard here?
I would have let him keep $50-100 (he certainly got away with some in his pockets) but he was such an asshole right away that he didn't give me the chance to come to any sort of deal. Most everyone at the party just wanted him gone. I do feel bad and maybe my guilt over the apparent double standard is why I'm asking here. But I do feel as though had he been even slightly cool and not threaten cops or lawsuits I wouldn't have been backed into a corner.
Edit7:
INFO We need to know where the money came from. Did the money in the machine come from YOU putting it in or playing the machine
So this is all guess work based on what my grandma said the jackpot could hold (there's a window that shows the coins in rhe jackpot, the space behind is about the size of a big shoe box). She said it gets full at $800. It was more than half when she and my grandpa gave it to me, I always guessed $500. In five years it's now 7/8ths full. I play it from to time to time so I'd say $100 of that is mine and $100 is friends. I think the jackpot and normal pay outs come from different boxes so last night was the last night I've ever seen that window empty. I know nothing of the machine or how it works or how to change settings so I may be so wrong and a slot machine "nerd" could correct me if I'm way off base.
Edit8: this is the best yta take so far and I can't let it get buried.
I really hope you get into some serious legal trouble and then you’ll wish all you lost was several hundred and not thousands including jail time.
Edit9 (at 5:45am, gotta work): you guys are really cracking me up. I love the comments that say "your edits make you YTA! Alone. Where did the money come from btw?" I truly can accept the YTA votes but so freaking many of them have basic facts wrong.
  1. I wasn't profiting off this machine. I've literally never opened it up and taken a single coin out.
  2. I can't afford to give a random dude $700. I don't need it now, but I have savings account I don't need it now either but I might some day. And now I've found out that some of the quarters that my grandma had from the 50s or 60s might actually be silver. So good thing I hung onto them right ? (I can't wait for the "you're a stupid thot" rationalizations to come from this one).
  3. I never cleaned it out because honestly I like the way it looked with the coins in the window. This thing is enourmous and built with casino security in mind so it was in fact, a great piggy bank.
  4. Some nice NTAs have suggested I have a bowl of quarters a for people to play. I actually in effect did that because 80% the time people who wanted to play didn't have change (I got it five years ago) so I always had quarters around, maybe just not right by the machine.
  5. As an example, Over the years it's mostly friends kids who want to play. I had a very precocious 9 year old once come over with his $20 of money truly expecting to get the jackpot. He was heartbroken when he didn't win (I might have given it to him since he was so cute) but I gave him a $20 silver certificate my step grandma had given me (acquired ny dubious means no doubt) and that kid was thrilled. so I always, always give people money back if they ask. I never intended to profit off the machine. No one has ever made a big deal of it before (save the 9 year old).
Edit10: this dude wins the comments, for all time:
I bet u look like jared fogle or some shit
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Edit 11: sooooo the plot thickens, thank you to some very helpful people who own slot machines who DM'ed who were also able to suggest experts in my area, I was able to call a local person who works on antique slot machines. My slot machine is highly customized but it's based around a pretty well known model from that era (don't want to say exactly because only a few of them exist anymore) and he said I could tell right away if the machine was broken or had been tampered with. In my very, very, very amateur job of checking it over it does appear that this little piece is either broken or misplaced. So it looks like this piece of shit "guest" actually broke my machine to steal my money. There wasn't a jackpot at all. I don't have confirmation of this until the repair guy is able to come later this week but it looks like that's what happened. The guy said there's an outside chance that if that piece was broken or tampered with that it was an accident but he wouldn't bet on it. I still don't care if I'm YTA till the cows come home, posting here has probably allowed me to get to the bottom of this. And fuck that guy.
Edit 12: well the amazing and level headed moderators of this sub just ever so politely informed me that I will not be allowed to update this post. So the short story is the "winner" almost certainly was hitting the machine and caused the jackpot to spill out. So had I been a real casino I would have enacted the "malfunction voids all pays and plays" clause. So yeah, I was totally in the right. Fuck this sub. Fuck the moderators. And fuck those of you on your stupid high horse. Most of you however were cool.

Donald Trump’s plan to steal the election

Donald Trump’s plan to steal the election
📷Hollywood makes movies about nefarious archetypes, who not just steal things, but cleverly plot a strategy to divert attention through subterfuge, deception and the long con. These cerebral dramas provide the mechanisms to delude and sap its victims, as we are entertained. We can admire these villains, so long as we lock the iron gates behind the perps. But that’s just the movies, today we are seeing “Grand Thief, White House,” play out in real time.
Thief-in-Chief
It remains unfathomable that Donald J. Trump became the 45th President of the United States, but he did, and for the majority of Americans who were opposed to his candidacy, it was a colossal mistake. So, how did this happen? Let’s pause and recount a few of the things that led to his nomination by the Republican Party.
At first, we must concede that Donald Trump is a talented man. And although so many of his finely honed talents are not admirable, they tend to serve him well. As a seasoned polemicist, Trump had only to make a lateral move into national politics, he already understood politics at the transactional level. Trump’s background in New York Real Estate taught him gangster politics, board room politics and court room politics. All of these pre-requisites are what it takes to succeed in Washington. When Trump joined the Republican National Primary Debates in 2015, he did so as an outsider ready to take over the people, the party and the country.
Donald Trump had been a Democrat for most of his life, even to the point of being a “Friend of Bill’s”, with the Clinton’s being his guests at his marriage to Melania. But the Democratic Party had no path that he could pursue to the nomination. Democrats protected their franchise with Super-delegates and he had no way to crack that block of protection. A con works best on unsuspecting victims and Super-delegates are anything but that. The Republicans had their own version of Super-delegates, but their function was to facilitate the leader’s path to the nomination. Donald Trump didn’t take the Republican Party be heist, he just rolled the ball and the GOP hopefuls scattered like bowling pins.
Trump’s message in 2016 was simple “Back to the Future” politics, where America could be made great again if our collective grievances were heard. Grievance politics allowed Trump to pick up the low hanging fruit in states where blue collar jobs were vanishing. To those who lost their jobs and to those stuck in dying industries, Trump promised to bring back jobs from China and revive the sagging coal industry. In West Virginia, a state known for mountaintop-removal coal mining, Trump beat Clinton by 41.7 points. As the election drew near Trump promised that he would accept the outcome of the election, only so long as he won. He added to that with the often-repeated reminder, he could only lose if the election was rigged. Four years later, in 2020, he would offer up the exact same arguments.
So, here we are almost three weeks after the 2020 Election and Donald Trump has lost to Joe Biden at the Electoral College scoreboard: 306 to 232, ironically, the same number that Trump beat Clinton in 2016, before the faithless Electors jumped ship. The actual vote was only the first step in the process as the Trump campaign didn’t expect to win a popular vote margin, but hoped to win 270+ Electoral Votes in a repeat for 2016. Encouraging enough for Trump, the blue tsunami hoped for by the Democrats never materialized and Trump didn’t concede.
Long prior to election day it was clear that Covid-19 would have a major impact on the outcome. This reality made it apparent that both campaigns would have to engineer a political advantage out of a national disaster. Vice President Joe Biden’s plan was that a strong national response was the only solution to hold back the virus long enough for a vaccine to end the pandemic. President Trump had abandoned day to day management of the virus, instead putting his faith and hopes in miracle drugs and vaccines. If a vaccine could be delivered before the election, his victory was assured, but if not, he needed a fallback plan to deliver victory to his MAGA crowd.
According to the Trump strategy, the best way to win an election is to destroy the integrity of the election process. If the Trump Team could not win the election outright, they would inundate the courts with lawsuits claiming widespread fraud. Trump argued that the election, to be fair, must be called on election night, just as it has been for most of the TV era. Ballots, he argued, received after Election Day should be considered illegal, regardless of state law. Trump boasted that if the election were not called following the 11:00 O’clock news, the lawyers would go in.
With the number of Covid19 cases rising and the death toll surpassing 200,000, there was little advantage the Campaign could wring out of the White House’s handling of the pandemic. That is until they discovered pandemic influenced voting patterns would break in their favor. With social distancing a priority, voters preferred to vote by mail and states were preparing to have major swings away from in-person voting to mail-in voting. At this news the Trump Campaign pounced. Trump would now argue that mail-in ballots were ripe with fraud. That millions of ballots would pour in from foreign shores and voting, as we knew it, would be hopelessly compromised. The campaign would challenge in court, states embracing mail-in ballots. The results were that blue and swing states proceeded with mail-in plans while red states deferred to the wishes of the President and continued to restrict mail-in ballots. Mississippi would later relent allowing the pandemic to be used as a valid reason to use an Absentee Ballot.
The actions of the Trump camp resulted in a separation of how a sizeable number of Democrats and Republicans voted. Democrats preferred the safe mail-in method, while Republicans didn’t mind the inconvenience of in-person voting. The effect of the swing in voting preferences was felt immediately. On election night the in-person votes were totaled first, giving Trump significant leads in must-win swing states and before the night was over, Florida with 29 Electoral Votes, was called for Trump. In the wee hours of the morning following the election, Trump would claim that he had won and called a halt to the counting of mail-in ballots. Many Americans went to bed believing Trump had won the election and any deviation from that outcome would be met with intense scrutiny.
The counting of in-person ballots before mail-in ballots was the work of Republican controlled state legislatures. The rationale was that ballots totaled before Election Day might leak unfavorable results that could influence the outcome to the detriment of Republican candidates – including Trump. Counting the mail-in ballots after Election Day, as many swing states did, would leave them vulnerable to challenges of fraud. In each of the swing states won by Biden, including WS, MI, PA, GA, AZ, & NV, the winner came from behind following Election Day. Trump would argue that he won these states until an endless stream of mail-in votes overcame his totals.
There are two Trump cards left to play in an effort to overturn the election. The first and most iniquitous would be to declare state votes compromised through illegal mail-in ballots and have Republican led legislatures send a Republican slate of Electors off to the Electoral College. This means setting aside the popular vote and would result in immediate charges of stealing the election in plain sight. There are scenario’s where this could work, but the Trump team would have to produce a plausible argument that the popular vote was hopelessly compromised in multiple states he needs and could not be rectified in time for the Electoral College to meet. This card is probably not playable, but desperate times call for desperate measures.
The second card is to invoke the “Baker Method,” named after former Secretary of State, James Baker, who led a successful effort to secure the vote for George W. Bush in the election of 2000. Baker engineered a bi-partisan team of observers to challenge the intent of the voter, where the results would break along partisan lines. In this scenario Gore could not pick up additional votes, because the intent was challenged by the Republican observer.
Applying the Baker Method to the 2020 vote would require a bipartisan team to audit the signature match on mail-in ballots. Such a review could ostensibly show that for each signature that did not match, and bipartisan observers would ensure that outcome, a fraudulent ballot was cast. If enough potential fraudulent ballots were cast to make a difference, the Trump team would demand that all of the mail-in ballots be tossed out allowing Trump’s early lead to stand.
As a reminder, once the original signature verification is performed and the ballot passes, the signature card is separated from the actual ballot. This process ensures the “Secret Ballot”. A subsequent audit cannot put them back together again.
States that Trump needs to flip to overturn the election are the very same states that handed Trump the election in 2016 – Pennsylvania 20, Michigan 16 and Wisconsin 10. Should these states come out of the Biden column, the EV total for Biden slips to 260. Conversely if these states are posted to the Trump column the EV total hits 278 and Trump is the winner.
The whole point of the Trump team’s challenge is to convince the public that Biden is trying to steal the election, that the waters are sufficiently muddied preventing a clear winner to emerge, and to move the election into the Supreme Court for a final decision. Trump is gambling that a 6 to 3 majority will be enough to render him a 5 to 4 decision and a validated ticket to his re-election.
Will Trump be successful? Probably not. Without evidence of widespread fraud, it’s doubtful Trump could flip one state, let alone three. Joe Biden had said that he needed to beat Trump with an undisputable margin. Apparently, he has. Of the 71 million people who voted for Trump, how many support his post-election shenanigans? How many who have lived the democratic experience, voted in every election and believe in America, think this charlatan has won re-election, or do they even care, so long as he remains their President?
The lesson for the 2020 election is that a sitting United States President is trying to engineer a reversal of fortune and overturn a legal contest that he lost. Perhaps Trump believes he has the followers to pull this off and create the appearances of a huge success. But lacking is the moral integrity to do what’s in the best interest of the country. Regardless of how Americans voted, Trump and his enablers are intent on destroying the one aspect of democracy that makes America great, free and unencumbered elections. Trust in fellow American’s to do what’s right and belief in the institutions of democracy to withstand a rouge leader will see the country through these trying times.
God bless Joseph R. Biden Jr., God bless America.

Days earlier, an Azeri dissident Arif Mammadov, a former MFA diplomat in the EU, sharply rebuked Aliyev and accused him of coordinating the attacks against Armenians in Moscow and elsewhere to divert attention away from internal problems.

Can you get drunk on cheese?

Mikaelyan family moved from Yerevan to Gegharquniq to launch a milk farm in 2012. Little did they know that it'll turn into something much bigger.
They won a UN grant that helps rural businesses; the Russian govt transferred the grant.
Today they run a one of a kind cheese factory in Armenia that attracts many foreigners.

"We started from zero. No knowledge about cheese. No cash. 3 years of effort and 3 tons of wasted milk. Today we produce 10 types of cheese infused in cognac, wine, and herbs."

"The French are very proud of their wine and cheese. After testing ours, they often tell us that we should be proud of our work because we produce real high-quality French cheese. It's a compliment. We all know this is an Armenian cheese, though."

Macedonian Mafia

I am a Macedonian from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Macedonia. The Macedonian Mafia is a term used to describe illegal gangs and criminal organisations operating in my country Macedonia and within the Macedonian diaspora.
Macedonian organized crime figures operate mostly in Europe and North America (countries such as Germany, Austria, United States, Canada, Monaco, Italy, France, Spain, Cyprus, Turkey, Greece, Switzerland, England, Serbia, Montenegro, Kosovo and Bulgaria are primarily favored by Macedonian organized crime figures for operating in or for forming partnerships with local organized crime groups, primarily from other Balkan or Eastern European countries as well as Italian syndicates, for their cultural, linguistic, ethnographic and geographical similarities as well as because of existing mutual ties between the organized crime groups or their members abroad and in the home countries, or the use of countries such was Switzerland, Monaco, Luxembourg and Cyprus for off-shore banking and money laundering), as well as Canada, the United States, Australia and New Zealand. Macedonian organized crime groups co-operate with other Balkan organized crime groups including the Serbian, Bulgarian and Albanian groups, both in the Balkans and in other places around the world, as well as the Italian mafia and the Russian mafia (through Bulgaria). Macedonian organized crime is usually centered around all types of legitimate businesses alongside typical organized crime activities such as smuggling, import and export, drug trafficking, extortion, arms trade, fraud, auto theft, racketeering, gambling, human trafficking, murder, contract killing, bodyguarding, prostitution and money laundering. Macedonian organized crime is also involved in security companies like the Bulgarian mafia, as well as with them, especially operating out of cities in eastern Macedonia, such as Štip. They are thought to have ties with the Janev Clan and the Albanian Mafia when concerning the trade of tobacco. Macedonian organized crime in Australia and Toronto, Canada is predominant among youth.
Macedonian organized crime, similarly to Bulgarian, Serbian, Albanian and Russian organized crime, utilizes the concept of using security groups to protect their businesses, enforce their power and eliminate competition. These security groups are usually composed of ex military, special forces, martial artists/MMA fighters and bodybuilders. While most security groups are responsible for low level activities such as posing as nightclub bouncers(nightclubs are a Macedonian gangsters' favorite meeting and party place, along with the kafana). These security groups hide behind and operate mainly under a corporate structure, but some are more militarized than others and have been labelled as terrorist groups. It's also safe to say that the Macedonian military itself is also heavily influenced and involved in organized crime activities and is a breeding and training ground for some gangsters. Some well known and higher quality security groups usually possess Macedonia's best and most infamous enforcers, and aside having checkered backgrounds these criminals have gone to be the top ranking Macedonian politicians(presidents and prime ministers) and businessmen's personal security detail and bodyguards. They have even killed people on their behalf.
Same as the above, the banking system in Macedonia heavily relies on organized crime in order to flourish, with limited foreign funding from its umbrella banks in Western European countries, it's unable to flourish on its own. It's also safe to say that some Western European, Russian and Middle Eastern banks have set up money laundering centers in Macedonia in the form of banks, companies, religious and educational institutions. Recently, a growing trend in Macedonia used by organized crime groups to launder money(because of the country's poorly organized justice and financial system and widespread political corruption it's hard for law enforcement officials to find evidence highlighting any type of illegal activities in terms of financial crimes when the Macedonian legal statues on financial crime is still heavily based on the Communist Yugoslavian one which does not apply in any way to the modern Capitalist system) is through the use of gambling institutions such as sports betting and casinos.

What's considered fake news in today's Hungary

As some of you may know, PM Viktor Orbán has been handed unprecedented rule-by-decree powers by the Hungarian Parliament (where Fidesz holds a 2/3 supermajority) on March 31.
One of the most controversial aspect of it, besides being granted for an indefinite amount of time, were the new rules about punishing fake news and 'statements that could hinder the effectiveness of pandemic measures' with up to 5 years in prison. Many critics have stated the ambiguous wording leaves room for the government to target critical media outlets since being investigated for such accusation would start with the confiscation of their electronics as evidence, effectively making them unable to function for many months. That is yet to happen, but there's a growing number of incidents that raise an eyebrow. Journalists have been sent 'reminders' of the consequences of spreading fake news after asking certain questions about the pandemic.
Századvég is a think tank founded by long-term Fidesz associates that since 2010 had emerged as the chief policy advisor and pollster for both Fidesz and the state, winning public tenders to the tune of tens of millions of Euros. If there's one non-governmental organization in Hungary with sway over what the government does, it has to be them - although that's a bit of a chicken-or-the-egg situation, as their surveys and tone of publications conveniently match the government's stance on literally everything.
Two days ago, not two weeks after passing the law, they have published a 65-entry long list titled 'Fake News Watch' of public statements and article excerpts they consider 'fake news or statements able to instill fear'. All 65 entries on the list come from either opposition politicians, non-aligned experts or government critical media outlets.

The goal of these was to ensure the rule of law, to guarantee the operational capacity of the state and that in the event of a stoppage, citizens and corporations would not suffer undue harm. kormany.hu 2020.03.31

Constitutional Court chief HHK Hrayr Tovmasyan has been accused of being appointed as a judge through legal violations, and other illegal conducts during his administration. Parliament pointed out 4 reasons why he should be impeached. They will hold a vote tomorrow. If 78 MPs vote in favor, the Parliament will send a note to Constitutional Court and ask the 9 judges to vote to impeach Tovmasyan. They may or may not do it.
Tovmasyan himself says it's a political move to remove him as a "barrier".

BHK chief Gagik Tsarukyan: BHK will not vote for or against the resolution about Constitutional Court chief Hrayr Tovmasyan. We don't think this is a political persecution against him, however. BHK has always been against Tovmasyan's appointment. We pointed out legal problems during his appointment. Right now let the court itself decide whether to remove him or not. (which is the purpose of this vote, to ask the court to remove him, there is a reason they call you "dod").
A BHK MP later added that they aren't sure if the 4 reasons mentioned by QP are enough to impeach Tovmasyan.

QP alone has enough MPs to pass the resolution tomorrow. However, that would require an almost-unanimous vote within the party, which may not happen. LHK also expressed support towards the resolution, which could add enough votes.

Press F to receive A.
Earlier, health minister Torosyan sent a report to NSS accusing SOC boss Sanasaryan and 2-3 other employees of illegally helping a company, with ties to one of the SOC employees, to win a dialysis medical contract with hospitals.
Sanasaryan denied wrongdoing, pointing out the fact that SIS later found that the previous medical contracts were rigged. Sanasaryan claimed he was un-rigging it. NSS kept the charges nonetheless.

Sanasaryan lawyer says his client wasn't aware that several SOC employees were doing something illegal, no evidence that proves otherwise. "The only recorded fact shows that when Sanasaryan was hiring one of these employees, the employee disclosed that he has ties with a medical business."
Sanasaryan says that in late-2018, minister Torosyan contacted him to warn that a company that won a license, was affiliated with one of Sanasaryan's employees, but Torosyan allegedly said the company made a favorable financial offer to the hospital. Sanasaryan then allegedly checked the papers for a conflict of interest laws but concluded that it was done legally.

The defense is claiming: when the SOC employee Adyan was hired, he notified boss Sanasaryan that he owns a specific company. Sanasaryan told Adyan that the latter has to legally file some paperwork about a management transfer (or something like that), but the employee misunderstood it as "make sure it doesn't show up on legal documents".
Sanasaryan accused minister Torosyan of false testimony against him, and "now-retired" NSS Vanetsyan of giving PM a false info about him. He thinks it's because SOC was planning to audit NSS and Health Ministry.
3 employees + Sanasaryan are facing charges. The case is in court.

Minister Torosyan has responded saying he didn't give a false testimony. If he gave a false testimony it can be checked and either verified or denied; he transferred all the info he had to authorities, says Torosyan.

Mini-rant: Sullyvision's deceptive promotion of the recent Shaw/Woodward match.

There's something shady about this. Here's the poster for the match: https://i.imgur.com/vChZL49.jpg
Would you take this to mean there's a $20,000 money match between Shaw and Woodward, which will be streamed? That isn't what it means, and the "gotcha" on the poster is a single word: "qualifier". It's in the smaller print below

$20,000

...which is easy to miss, because we've all seen a million posters like this. Two dudes, a big amount of money (which is usually double the actual bet, but nevermind)... some venue and stream details... and then there's some cover-your-ass words describing the match as something other than gambling.
Everyone does the CYA words because they're worried about legal issues. They come up with some creative phrase to describe the match. "Two man invitational tournament"... "Winner take all, $10,000 entry fee". You get the idea. So I skimmed right over "invitational qualifier" and assumed it was just another euphemism for "money match".
But no, this match is part of some series of events, and $20,000 goes to the winner of the series. Not to Jayson Shaw or Skyler Woodward, for winning this single match.
So people buy the stream thinking this was two guys risking 10k or 20k, when it's actually an exhibition where someone gets paid a few bucks (I heard $1300).
I brought this up with the streamer, and got the exact same response every streamer gives when you complain about something they did wrong. Basically: 'what? we were very clear. If you misinterpreted it, that's your fault, not ours'.
Eventually they relented and grudgingly apologized, but claimed something like... 'we can't put every little detail on the flyer and have it still be readable'. But IMO this 'detail' was too important to leave out, and they probably did that deliberately because a $20,000 money match sells more tickets than a $1300 exhibition.
I know I'm not the only one who got fooled by this.
From the AZ thread:
gxman: "He obviously intentionally made it vague so people that were implying it was a 20K match in the middle would buy the ppv.
Probably sold it to the players that if there are 500 ppv buyers, you get xx sum of money plus potential to earn 20K."
Jasonlaus: "Definitely misleading.
I just figured the advertisement had to do with gambling laws in Texas. It certainly looked like they were playing for $20,000.
Why wouldn’t he be advertising the series, the other players, the other match-ups, when the other matches will be played, when are the finals, etc."
Denis this kid: "I must admit I thought there was 20K in middle when I bought the stream."
Tristan: "Wow, I just bought the stream an hour ago and now I look at this thread and realize it's not actually a match for 20k.
There's no way in hell this wasn't advertised vaguely in order to entice people into buying the ppv on the assumption that these two were playing for high stakes. Typical pool world con man culture - but it still pisses me off that I fell for it.
Last time they get any of my $$."

Looking for justification for terminating ex's parental rights. Arizona courts.

Sorry for the long post, it's been an interesting few years - Here goes I (39M) have had sole custody and full legal decision-making authority over my two kids (17&11) for the last 3 years since my divorce. My ex had a full mental break, psychotic episodes, several admissions to a mental facility and frankly made her condition quite apparent in the courts during the hearings.
Judge stated it this way: "Father appears to be in good physical and mental health. Mother appears to be in good physical health, although she did testify in court that she has some "wires crossed in her brain". In addition, the mother has struggled with significant mental health concerns, especially in the last 2 years, including multiple arrests and appearing in person, in custody, for several hearings. "
"The court orders that the father shall have sole legal decision-making authority over the minor children. The father shall be the primary residential parent, and that all parenting time shall be awarded to the Father, unless the father chooses (in his sole discretion) to allow the mother parenting time. If the father chooses to allow the mother parenting time, the terms and duration shall likewise be at the father's sole discretion"
Clearly, I have no qualms with this arrangement and it has allowed me to protect my kids from her, as she is still not healthy - which brings me to my question: The mother has not fulfilled any of the very simple requirements I put in place to protect the kids. After a 6 month period of no contact from her, she wished to SEE the kids, (She is in another area of AZ, 2hrs away from us; she moved away), to which I stated that we would start with phone calls to see how the kids reacted and if all went well, we could have a supervised visit and then go from there if the kids were ok with it. She never did this simple step and instead chose to argue with me about everything. In the last 3years she has seen them 3times, each time because she had court in our town, for an hour each visit. The last time, she was drinking before and during the visit. Recently, she has disappeared again and I found online that she has about 6 arrests in the last few months (fighting, disorderly, trespassing, criminal damage) and 5 FTA warrants. If something were to happen to me, I want the kids to go to my current wife, or maybe another blood relative, just not to the ex. I have been told that even a will can be upended and I do not want to gamble with their lives. Do I have any legal footing, given the recent events and lack of visits on her part, to request a termination of her rights so that there's no chance she'll get them if I die?

The "Armed Citizen" column in the NRA's American Rifleman Magazine (print and online versions) is fake news propaganda.

The NRA's magazine has had a page they titled "Armed Citizen" that appears to have been in the magazine from the beginning. Each month they post a highly edited news bite they found on some newspaper site recounting where an "Armed Citizen" had defended their person, family, bystanders or business with a firearm. Quite often it involves discharging their firearm resulting in the injury or death of someone suspected of acting illegally to threaten them or others. The articles leave out many, many details contained in the original news article. The version they post in the NRA's "Armed Citizen" usually give a false impression of the vile and dangerous nature of the "assailant" that is deal with by the "Armed Citizen" with their firearm. They also skirt over legal issues calling into question the legality of the actions of the "Armed Citizen" with in using their firearm in the incident.
So, I posted some of the information from original news articles they posted under "Armed Citizen" in heavily edited form. The information the American Rifleman column leaves out. What I got for my effort was initial replies followed the next morning by being banned from the nra subreddit.
Below are my postings revealing the fraudulent nature of the "Armed Citizen" articles in the American Rifleman web site and on page 10 of the magazine of the same name.

The Armed Citizen® January 4, 2019 Not much of a 'news week' ?
This installment of Armed Citizen features a duplicate of the same article posted for February 25, 2019. I guess NR couldn't find any reason to have a gun during the February 25, 2019 period so they just copied and pasted this one into it.
The Armed Citizen® January 7, 2019 Ah, those little details
The incident cited tells of a family 'matriarch' defending her family from a "51 year old trespasser" who'd pointed a gun at them.
The local news article however paints a slightly different picture than the "trespasser" walking up the the "matriarch" and pointing a gun at her and her children.
The news account has her son discovering the "trespasser" (who only seems to have trespassed into the "matriarch's" truck cab, pointing a gun with no round in the chamber (didn't say if his gun was double or single action) in response to the "matriarch" pointing her 38 revolver at him. The "trespasser" then backed away, keeping his gun trained on the "matriarch" but firing no shots. The only shots fired were fired by the "matriarch". The first (allegedly) as warning. "Then fired two more shots at Ryder as he walked west, away from them." Police then arrived and took the "trespasser" into custody.
Just interesting the picture of "the trespasser" charging up to the plucky "matriarch" and her clutch of youngins waving a gun as opposed to him being discovered having gained entry into the "matriarch's" truck for reasons not divulged by the article.
The Armed Citizen® January 11, 2019 - Get off my driveway
The incident involved a man attempting to break through a house's garage door. I don't suppose it's been established whether the man intended to continue from the garage into the house or just take items from the garage. But NR says "broke into the home through the garage" which is not born out by news articles of the incident. The article stetes that “The homeowner fired at least one round in the direction of the person who was breaking into his house.” and that the Armed Citizen "“The homeowner fired at least one round in the direction of the person who was breaking into his house.”
NR chooses to leave out critical details so that the impression is left that a man broke into a home and was shot by the Armed Citizen inside the home when news articles at the time tell a quite different story and there is still a chance that the Armed Citizen in this case may be held legally responsible for unlawfully shooting and killing a man in his driveway he says was trying to break into his garage.
The Armed Citizen® January 14, 2019 - Dog gone
The incident cited is of a hot burglary foiled by an Armed Citizen couple who opened fire on the (apparently unarmed) robbers, hitting one, sending him to a hospital. What the NR article does not mention however is that the Armed Citizen couple's small terrier dog named Rezz died in the crossfire. It is the depth of journalistic irresponsibility to omit this tragic loss from NR's heavily edited version of this story. Out hopes and prayers go out to this little canine angel. May little Rezz roam and frolic among the clouded hills of doggo heaven until being reunited with the masters who loved him or her so much on earth. Unless it was one of the masters who shot little Rezz dead. Then Rezz will likely prefer to roam with packs of feral canines attacking Armed Citizens and seizing their firearms and burying them so they'll never be found and used to kill again.
I urge you to have a good look at these two brazen ruffians and consider why they would break into the house of two 20-somethings, both packing heat in the sack. Just sayin.
The Armed Citizen® February 11, 2019 - 'Remember to drag 'em inside the house
The incident involved an Armed Citizen in Yuma County AZ shooting three apparently unarmed women and man entering or attempting to enter (depending on who you believe) to enter his house. One of the women shot died.
Two articles said the burglars were shot "as they entered". [Another]("The Yuma County Sheriff's Office says people inside the home were awakened by noised outside of people trying to get inside) said "The Yuma County Sheriff's Office says people inside the home were awakened by noised outside of people trying to get inside."
Once again, the suspects were not getting much sympathy from the person whose house was being broken into or the police, who likely knew the (probably drug addicts; vagrants) burglars. And I can recall many times hearing the advice to Armed Citizens that 'if you find someone entering your house or in your house and shoot them, be sure to drag them inside the house or you'll be charged with unlawful homicide. NR simply accepts their Armed Citizen's advice as do many pro NRA web sites that cite this incident as yet more proof every law abiding citizen needs a gun.
I just have to wonder if this could have been handled in a way where no loss of life would take place
I have heard someone trying to enter my home. I just stayed in bed and yelled and heard them scampering away. It seems unlikely a man would bring three women to stack a home unless he thought the house was unoccupied. Or maybe he planned to let the women enter first and take the bullets while he high-tailed it. This would seem a believable scenario for a pack of meth-heads looking for something to pawn for their next fix, not some diabolical home invasion attack. I have to believe that if the burglars were in any way armed, it would be in the police report and NR would have made light of it.

The article states that “The homeowner fired at least one round in the direction of the person who was breaking into his house.” and that the Armed Citizen "“The homeowner fired at least one round in the direction of the person who was breaking into his house.”
Just sayin.

The Armed Citizen® January 18, 2019 - Blind Justice
The incident tells of a robbery at an internet 'game room' (gambling) in Jacksonville, Fla., where a man attempting to rob the business sprayed pepper spray into the face of the security guard. The guard then shot the assailant. What NR fails to mention is that the guard was blinded by the spray and was only able to shoot at the escaping (also not mentioned) robber with one of the business's patrons "steer the armed security guard in the suspect's direction." (and the aim of his gun I would assume) towards the door where the failed robber had just exited the business from. NR fails to mention the robber was fleeing and that the security guard's gun was all but aimed by someone other than himself, or that he was just spraying bullets in the general direction his aiming aid had pointed him in. Either way, the guard took lives other than the robber into his hands by firing at a point that his personal safety was no longer threatened since the robber was running out the door.
I just have to wonder if this could have been handled in a way where no loss of life would take place
The robber does not seem to have produced a gun. It's therefore not unreasonable to suspect he planned on wrestling the security guard's gun from him to complete the robbery. A robber can't point pepper spray and say "put the money in the bag or I'll spray". It just won't work. So it appears the guard did the right thing by holding onto his gun. But his blind spray-and-pray response was non justified by the time the assailant had exited the building.
The Armed Citizen® January 21, 2019 - Drinking till dawn
The cited incident involved an Armed Citizen shooting one of his two sons to to save the other who the first son was holding in a headlock and holding a knife over. My first impression is, what kind of Armed Citizen lets a machete wielding son force them to take refuge in a room. Local news article.
I just have to wonder if this could have been handled in a way where no loss of life would take place
How about calling the police at that point instead of cowering as their two sons consumed alcohol until 6 A.M. ? Chances are, if they had called 911 when the machete play started, the police could have disarmed and taken into custody of the older brother and gotten him psychological care after drying out the day after.
And if a gun had to come into play, couldn't the Armed Citizen maybe shot the arm holding the knife, then the one administering the choke-hold instead of lethal strikes? Maybe the father was too drunk to shoot straight. A heartbreaking story.
The Armed Citizen® March 1, 2019 - Not exactly Michael Myers
The cited incident cites a man receiving superficial stab woulds to his elbow by an attacker on Halloween evening whereupon the victim's brother cousin exited his car and was subsequently stabbed as well in his elbow. The cousin then drew and fired a firearm, killing the knife attacker.
I just have to wonder if this could have been handled in a way where no loss of life would take place
The coverage does not mention any warning issued to the knife wielding man prior to opening fire on him. The first victim received a single (non life-threatening) stab to his elbow. Not exactly a death blow. There is no mention of any follow-up stabs. This seems like an opportunity for a warning. The cousin seems like he might have been taken by surprise from the description. If he'd seen his cousin getting stabbed, it seems like he would have had his gun drawn by the time he'd stepped out of the car and so could have fired or warned before being stabbed himself.
Of course this is Monday quarterbacking. But it's significant the details NR leaves out of these Armed Citizen accounts. Most readers probably envision Michael Myers trapsing along among trick-or-treaters searching for some throats to slash. I don't know the motivation the attacker had. But if it was killing, he was obviously either incompetent or half-hearted in his efforts. For that matter, no mention is made of the blade size. I know. Any knife can deal a deadly cut. But not when the blade is directed at elbows and biceps.
Yes, the Armed Citizen was in his rights to draw and fire his firearm in the scenario described. I'm just left wondering who's dumber. The idiot poking a knife or the Armed Citizen who walks right into him after seeing his cousin getting stabbed by him.
The Armed Citizen® February 22, 2019 Shootout at the golden arches
The article cites a shooting at a Birmingham, Ala McDonalds where a man is exiting the diner as the last customer. As he was exiting, an armed man wearing a mask burst into the McDonalds, apparently forcing the man back inside (though the citation does not say this) the building. The citation says the gunman "firing at everyone inside". The impression may be of an intentional mass shooting when it seems more likely the gunman was intent upon robbing the McDonalds at the end of the day and before all their cash had been locked in their safe. The man exiting only became involved because the manager had used his key to open the door and would lock it back up after the man and his sons had exited.
The citations states "The attacker’s gunfire hit the armed citizen and one of his sons before he pulled his own concealed firearm and shot back". This only makes sense to me if the "Armed Citizen" made moves towards his gun. He has of course, every right, under the circumstances, to do so. However, with two sons and McDonalds staff around him, he may be risking their lives by engaging the robber with his gun. Things likely happened fast and whether the Armed Citizen reached for his gun before the gunman opened ire may or may not have been determinable by eyewitnesses or store surveillance video. After that bullets were sprayed by both gunmen and the gunman was killed and the Armed Citizen and his sun were hit. Fortunately both survived.
I just have to wonder if this could have been handled in a way where no loss of life would take place
Armed robbery is very common these days. I've heard people in big cities like NYC and LA say they and most of their friends have been robbed at gunpoint. They mostly just don't make sudden moves and slowly hand the robber their wallet. It's a pain in the ass, no one usually gets shot.
The robber was identified as having previously been charged with "possession of marijuana and carrying a pistol without a license" and had had his probation revoked. He apparently had no homicide convictions.
It's likely neither the police nor the McDonalds staff have any sympathy for the gunman and it's entirely possible this may have affected any action taken by the Armed Citizen that may have triggered the gunman to begin shooting.
The Armed Citizen® January 28, 2019 - Missed by that much
The incident involves a Walgreen employee who drew his legally carried firearm during a armed holdup at the store he was working at, killing the robber. OK. But the NR's casual mention that a bystander was "grazed in the shooting" is disturbing. Grazed often means - a few inches this way or that and the you have a dead bystander. It's obviously an out-of-control shot so it could have landed anywhere. Isn't it interesting NR reduces the number of "grazed bystanders" from two to one and fails to mention that both were hit by the Armed Citizen.
In fact Three people were shot — one fatally — by a south Tulsa Walgreens employee. So this Oklahoma Walgreens cowboy put three lives in danger. More luck than skill that only the robber received the killing shot.
I just have to wonder if this could have been handled in a way where no loss of life would take place
Time after time it seems when an Armed Citizen pulls a firearm in the middle of a crime in progress by a gun wielding perpetrator results in a 'bystander' getting shot - either by the Armed Citizen or the perp. Either way, Armed Citizens don't seem very good at weighting the risks to others to their gunslinging show-boating.
The Armed Citizen® February 25, 2019 - Jim Dandy and his gun to the rescue
The incident cites a domestic disturbance that is taken into a parking lot where a man sees a neighbor kicking a woman and her 10 year old daughter. It does not mention whether the witness dialed 911. Neither does it say whether the kicking was moderate ass-kicking or if the victim(s) were on the ground being kicked in the head. The neighbor grabs a gun and runs to the parking lot, confronts the kicker while the woman and her daughter run off. The armed neighbor says the kicker charged him, ignoring warnings to halt. The armed neighbor shoots the kicker several times - killing him.
The article cited in the Clarkesville News and Tribune (not Daily News) says that "a domestic dispute started in an apartment" indicating the assailant was known to the victim, not someone showing up at her door. No mention is made of the relationship between the woman victim and the assailant. The woman her daughter were treated at a local hospital for 'minor injuries' and released. This too was omitted from the NRA citation.
I just have to wonder if this could have been handled in a way where no loss of life would take place
Police are expert at handling domestic disputes. They are a large part of their responsibility as law enforcement officers. I've heard they can be very dangerous for all involved and they have tactics and training to quell them without resorting to deadly force.
If the armed citizen had taken his cell phone instead instead (or along with ) his holstered gun and dialed 911, following the three involved to guide police to the location, the life of someone the article refers to simply as "the assailant" may have been spared. We know little of this person other than he is now dead.

NFL100: 100 Days, 100 Years (Day 95)

"Pass is intercepted at the goal line by Malcolm Butler! Unreal!"-Al Michaels (Super Bowl XLIX, Malcolm Butler intercepts Russell Wilson at the 1-yard line in the final moments)
To celebrate 100 days until the 100th season, it is time to continue counting down to the historic centennial season of the National Football League.
Over the 100 days leading up to kickoff, we’ll look at each season since the very beginning, and how the league has evolved to today’s game.
Season 95: 2014 NFL (National Football League)
Duration: September 4, 2014-February 1, 2015
Teams: 32
2014 NFL Draft: 256 selections (7 rounds), held in New York City, NY.
2014 First Draft Pick: Jadeveon Clowney, Defensive End from the University of South Carolina (Houston Texans)
2014 AP Most Valuable Player: Aaron Rodgers, Quarterback (Green Bay Packers)
Super Bowl XLIX: New England Patriots (AFC) defeated Seattle Seahawks (NFC) 28-24 at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, AZ.
This season featured the following rule changes:
-Eliminating the referee's timeout after a sack (previously the clock did not stop for a sack only after the two-minute warning).
-Simplify spot of enforcement on defensive fouls committed behind the line of scrimmage to enforce from the previous spot instead of the end of the run or the spot of the foul.
-Raise the height of the goal post from 30 feet to 35 feet. The uprights had been 30 feet high since the 1974 NFL Season.
-Extend the restriction on roll-up blocks to include such blocks from the side as well as from the back.
-"Dunking" the football through the goal post or crossbar (or any other means of using the goal post/crossbar as a prop in touchdown celebrations) is now considered unsportsmanlike conduct (15 yards). This rule was in response to New Orleans Saints tight end Jimmy Graham's tendency to dunk the football after scores. One of Graham's dunks bent the goal posts so much that the game was delayed several minutes in order for the stadium crew to make repairs. In addition, the aforementioned rule change to extend the goal posts will add extra weight, increasing the chances that it could collapse. This celebration was previously "grandfathered" as legal much like the Lambeau Leap.
-Expand replays to cover recovery of loose balls even if the play is blown dead. This was in response to San Francisco 49ers defensive player NaVorro Bowman's clear recovery of a loose ball and downing by contact in the previous year's NFC Championship Game. The ball was given to the Seattle Seahawks after Seahawks running back Michael Robinson took it away from Bowman after Bowman was forced to let go of the ball due to a severe knee injury. Despite the indisputable video evidence of the recovery by Bowman, the play was not reviewable.
-Connecting the officiating command center to the field-to-booth communication relay, allowing the Referee to communicate with the command center during replay reviews. This was in response to some controversial replay reviews during the 2013 season, as well as league officials observing the NHL's command center. Unlike the NHL's replay system, however, NFL referees will still make the final decisions instead of the command center.
-Make on-field taunting and use of racial/sexual slurs subject to unsportsmanlike conduct penalties (15 yards).
Since the 2002 realignment, the playoff format has remained the same. A total of 12 teams (6 from each conference), the playoffs feature 4 division champions and 2 wild cards per conference. The division champions would be seeded 1-4 based on their records, while the 5-6 seeds would be the highest non-division champions. This would mean that a wild card team could not host a post-season contest unless a 5 and 6 seed won 2 road games to appear in a conference title game. As of 2018-19, this has not yet occurred.
The playoff qualifiers were:
AFC Seed NFC
New England Patriots (12-4) [East] #1 Seattle Seahawks (12-4) [West]
Denver Broncos (12-4) [West] #2 Green Bay Packers (12-4) [North]
Pittsburgh Steelers (11-5) [North] #3 Dallas Cowboys (12-4) [East]
Indianapolis Colts (11-5) [South] #4 Carolina Panthers (7-8-1) [South]
Cincinnati Bengals (10-5-1) [Wild Card] #5 Arizona Cardinals (11-5) [Wild Card]
Baltimore Ravens (10-6) [Wild Card] #6 Detroit Lions (11-5) [Wild Card]
Wild Card Playoffs
Carolina Panthers defeated Arizona Cardinals 27-16 at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, NC.
Baltimore Ravens defeated Pittsburgh Steelers 30-17 at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh, PA.
Indianapolis Colts defeated Cincinnati Bengals 26-10 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, IN.
Dallas Cowboys defeated Detroit Lions 24-20 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, TX.
Divisional Playoffs
New England Patriots defeated Baltimore Ravens 35-31 at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, MA.
Seattle Seahawks defeated Carolina Panthers 31-17 at CenturyLink Field in Seattle, WA.
Green Bay Packers defeated Dallas Cowboys 26-21 at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, WI.
Indianapolis Colts defeated Denver Broncos 24-13 at Sports Authority Field at Mile High in Denver, CO.
Conference Championships
NFC Championship Game: Seattle Seahawks defeated Green Bay Packers 28-22 (OT) at CenturyLink Field in Seattle, WA.
AFC Championship Game: New England Patriots defeated Indianapolis Colts 45-7 at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, MA. (Deflategate)
Super Bowl XLIX
The New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks competed in Super Bowl XLIX at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, AZ. The attendance was 70,288 while NBC handled the broadcast duties. There was no favorite as betters called the game a toss-up.
After the first two drives of the game ended in punts, New England got the first scoring opportunity with a drive to the Seattle 10-yard line. However, on third-and-six, quarterback Tom Brady threw a pass that was intercepted by cornerback Jeremy Lane and returned to the 14-yard line. Lane broke his wrist and tore his ACL on the play when he tried to break his fall with his arm extended after being tackled by Julian Edelman, and subsequently missed the rest of the game. The game remained scoreless until New England's first drive of the second quarter, which began with Brady's 17-yard completed pass to Danny Amendola. Brady later completed a 23-yard pass to Edelman on third-and-nine, and eventually finished the drive with an 11-yard touchdown pass to receiver Brandon LaFell.
Seattle began to make progress when Russell Wilson completed his first pass of the day, a six-yard completion to Jermaine Kearse on third-and-six and with 5:36 left in the second quarter. After a five-yard run by Marshawn Lynch, Wilson completed a 44-yard pass to receiver Chris Matthews on the Patriots 11-yard line, setting up Lynch's three-yard touchdown run to tie the game. Only 2:16 remained in the half after Lynch's touchdown, but the scoring was far from over. Brady completed 5/6 passes for 59 yards on New England's ensuing possession, the last one a 22-yard touchdown completion to tight end Rob Gronkowski with 31 seconds remaining. Taking the ball back on their own 20, Seattle started off their drive with a 19-yard burst from Robert Turbin and a 17-yard scramble by Wilson. Then Wilson completed a 23-yard pass to Ricardo Lockette, with a facemask penalty on defensive back Kyle Arrington adding additional yardage that gave the team a first down on the Patriots 11-yard line. Only six seconds remained until halftime at this point, but coach Pete Carroll decided to take a shot at the end zone rather than kick a field goal, a gamble that paid off as Wilson threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Matthews on the next play, tying the game at 14 with just two seconds showing on the clock.
Seattle took the second half kickoff and drove 72 yards to the Patriots eight-yard line, featuring a 15-yard run by Lynch and a 45-yard reception by Matthews. After Lynch was stopped on third-and-one in the red zone, Steven Hauschka finished the drive with a 27-yard field goal, giving Seattle their first lead of the game at 17–14.[80] On New England's next possession, linebacker Bobby Wagner's interception of a Brady pass and six-yard return gave the Seahawks the ball at midfield. Just as with their last interception, Seattle lost a key defensive player due to injury. Defensive end Cliff Avril lay on the field motionless. After finally getting to his feet, he entered concussion protocol and did not re-enter the game. Seattle's pass rush, particularly Bennett inside and Avril outside, had hurried Brady into several drive-ending incompletions as well as the first interception. With Avril out, the Patriots were able to double-team Bennett and give Brady more time in the pocket.
Following Wagner's interception, Seattle's offense took advantage of the turnover, driving 50 yards in six plays and scoring on Wilson's three-yard touchdown pass to Doug Baldwin, who was penalized 15 yards for unsportsmanlike conduct for an improper end-zone celebration. This made the score 24–14, and it would remain this way going into the fourth quarter. Until this game, no team in Super Bowl history had come back to win after facing a fourth-quarter deficit of more than seven points.
With 12:10 left in the game, New England mounted a 68-yard drive to cut their deficit to 24–21 on Brady's four-yard touchdown toss to Amendola. The drive included two 21-yard completions from Brady to Edelman, the first one converting a third-and-14 in what was described by Bleacher Report as "the NFL's worst nightmare." Edelman was clearly concussed by Chancellor's helmet-to-helmet hit.
Following a three-and-out for Seattle, New England got the ball back on their own 32 at the 6:52 mark. Brady started off the possession with two completions to running back Shane Vereen for 13 total yards, and followed it up with a nine-yard pass to Edelman. Following a penalty against New England, Gronkowski caught a pair of passes that moved the team up 33 yards to the Seattle 19. Over the next three plays, Vereen rushed for seven yards, Brady passed to LaFell for seven more, and Blount ran the ball two yards to the three-yard line. Finally, with 2:02 left in the game, Brady gave his team a 28–24 lead with a three-yard touchdown toss to Edelman.
After a touchback gave Seattle the ball on their 20, Wilson started off the Seahawks drive with a 31-yard completion to Lynch. Then after two incompletions, he picked up another first down with an 11-yard pass to Lockette. The following play gave Seattle an opportunity to win the game. Wilson threw a deep pass down the right sideline to Kearse, who was covered by rookie reserve cornerback Malcolm Butler. Both players dove through the air for the ball, and Butler managed to deflect it with one hand, but the pass fell right into the hands of Kearse, who tipped it to himself and caught the ball while he was lying on his back. Butler managed to recognize the catch and recover in time to shove Kearse out of bounds as he got up, preventing a Seattle touchdown, but the play netted 33 yards and gave the Seahawks a first down at the Patriots five-yard line with 1:05 left in regulation. Announcer Cris Collinsworth compared the play to two other acrobatic receptions by Patriots opponents that had defeated them in prior Super Bowls: David Tyree's Helmet Catch in Super Bowl XLII and Mario Manningham's sideline catch in Super Bowl XLVI.
On the next play, Lynch ran the ball four yards to the Patriots one-yard line where he was brought down by Dont'a Hightower. Since New England did not call a timeout, Seattle was able to run the clock down to 26 seconds before taking the snap for the next play. The Seahawks called a pass play in which Kearse would run a pick on the right side of the field to draw defensive backs away from Lockette as Lockette ran a slant to the middle, but Brandon Browner blocked Kearse at the line of scrimmage, preventing him from reaching Butler. Lockette appeared to be uncovered at the one-yard line when Wilson threw him the ball, but before the ball arrived, Butler correctly read the play and rushed into position to make the interception.[86] The turnover—after an unsportsmanlike conduct call for excessive celebration—gave New England the ball on their own one-yard line with 20 seconds remaining in regulation.
The game was not quite over at this point. Since the ball was placed on the one-yard line, Brady had to take the snap in the end zone. If he took a knee or the Patriots otherwise failed to advance the ball beyond the goal line, this would be a safety, awarding Seattle two points and forcing the Patriots to kick the ball back to the Seahawks. Seattle would then have one time out and about 18 seconds to advance the ball into field goal range with the chance to win. However, the Patriots took a time out then held the ball as the play clock ran in the attempt to draw a Seattle defense player across the line of scrimmage. Had it run out, the delay of game penalty would have merely moved the ball back half the distance to the goal.
The strategy worked. Defensive lineman Michael Bennett moved across the line of scrimmage, earning a five-yard encroachment penalty and moving the ball to the New England six-yard line. Brady then took a knee, Seattle called its final time-out, and Seattle linebacker Bruce Irvin rushed some of the Patriots players, starting a brawl involving players from both teams that resulted in a personal foul penalty for Seattle. Irvin received the first ejection in Super Bowl history for throwing a closed hand punch at Rob Gronkowski. Brady knelt one more time and the Patriots were victorious.
The win gave the New England Patriots their 4th Super Bowl title (first since Super Bowl XXXIX). They have since returned to the Super Bowl 3 additional times, winning twice (LI and LIII). The Seattle Seahawks were denied as back-to-back champions, and since have yet to return to the Super Bowl. Their closest attempts were losses in the divisional round of the playoffs to the Carolina Panthers (31-24) in 2015 and the Atlanta Falcons (36-20) in 2016.
